What have you seen at the theatre recently and would like to recommend to us?

Last month I saw 'unicorn' fantastic play about bringing a third into a marriage as a throuple.

Today I saw 'drum Tao' brilliant Japanese drummers and dancers.

I've got 'the book of Mormon' coming up soon.

And disappointed I'm missing 'the shark is broken' which is on at Canterbury this week

Last time I went to the Theatre was to see the stage adaptation of '12 Angry Men', absolutely superb.

I can't recommend 'what' to see as I don't go all that often, but I can recommend 'where' to go... If you've never watched a show/play at the Minack Theatre in Cornwall, add it to your bucket-list. Trust me, it's something else!

Just watched the trailer and basically they've made a show based around trust falling exercises they get you to do on team building events, it does actually look like the type of show I'd go and see

All over

Years gone by, I used to see something literally at least once a week. Like most, I have seen all the big ones like Le Mis, Miss Saigon, Starlight, Cats and such like. Some several times, but also lots of, shakespear plays, alternative theatre, ballet, operas etc. Sadly life more recently has not allowed much time for that but hopefully will soon again as I miss it. Art in all it's forms it feeds the soul, enriches your mind and being and shapes your world.

Saw Ian McKellen in Player King's last year the recent modern adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV plays before he sadly fell off stage and had an accident later on the run. But it was absolutely fantastic, if a little long. McKellen was amazing, the young actor playing Hal was brilliant too and the staging, sets, production were fab. It was on a West End run for a bit not sure if it finished.

I enjoyed Starlight Express but once was quite sufficient for me.

Watching Macbeth was quite novel for two reasons: the audience wore headphones which added to the immersive experience and, more importantly, the impressive manner in which the background characters all broke into a slow motion of movement (faux time-lapse) when the protagonist performed a monologue.

The last Macbeth I went to see was a small production with only 5 actors and about 30 people in the audience sitting in a circle with the actors in the small area in the middle, really intimate.

I also went and saw upstart crow with David Mitchell before it got closed for lockdown, that was hilarious but my friend had never seen the TV show and didn't really know any of Shakespeare's work so she was the only one who had no idea what was going on and what everyone was laughing at

Most recent - Much Ado About Nothing with Hayley Atwell and Tom Hiddleston.

It felt very... middle aged millennial, what with the soundtrack and deliberately addressing the audience with certain lines, the references.

But I loved it. Loud, schmaltzy. There's something about a regional accent that lends itself so well to Shakespeare.

I also watched Company of Wolves and that was truly fantastic - it helps that I'm a Carter fangirl to be fair. It was more than that though - the careful blocking because we were in a round. The beautiful choreography. The haunting delivery.

It's quite refreshing to read about these experiences. I enjoy smaller productions.

Going to the theatre is soooo horrendously expensive, sadly. Not-so-comfortable 'Victoriana' seating, warm and stuffy galleries, expensive Gin. Did I mention the Gin? No? The expensive gin...and if I'm feeling exceptionally flush I sometimes buy the tonic. I do quite like the theatre.

I find the Theatre much more affordable than gigs for a similar quality. Apart from special offers and late discounts even the 'worst' seats usually have a decent view and sound. I saw Guys and Dolls at the Bridge last year in the cheapest seat (£25) and it was fantastic.

The Tempest, Drury Lane (same director and pretty much the same cast as Much Ado About Nothing). The production was AMAZING, especially lighting, sound, and the use of silk material to represent the storm. The acting was fantastic too, which the exception of Sigourney Weaver, who was a bit...wooden.

Most recently we saw &Juliet with the family, it was great fun and very silly. Some sublime vocals on show.

I love plays, musicals, opera - all sorts. I went to my first poetry night last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was quite low key so very accessible. I tend to find dance a bit hit and miss for me - some I love, some leaves me cold.

Musicals definitely count as theatre, it's simply a dramatic version with musical score. Opera, ballet, those at forms are theatre too.

I know, I feel like I'm always letting myself down as I should like it. It's the only type of theatre (actually apart from one Shakespeare) where I left during the interval!

We all like different things. I grew up with grandad liking (not grandma, she like dancing but happy to go along with his passion as he was with hers ). Just like anything else sometimes you connect with something, sometimes not. I also find with opera that my mood and life feelings need to be qiite atuned with a particular one at the time to enjoy it.

I only go to see musicals lol

Saw a couple of new shows last year

Becoming Nancy at the Birmingham rep. Very good and a great little theatre!

Why am I so single at the Garrick in London. Fabulous show!! I really hope it transfers to a bigger London theatre or goes on tour. We have not heard the last of it I'm sure. Cast album drops tomorrow!

Also seen Percy Jackson and the lightning thief at the other palace and an obsessed with the soundtrack.

Saw kinky boots this week with Johannes radabae in. S great show, although I feel some of the songs slow it down a bit. A great feeling good ending saves it.

Off to see six for the 3rd time next week. It's not a show show, more s concert type show. Very good.

Then of course there is my love....rocky horror. Lost count how many times I've seen it.

The Book of Mormon is reported to be absolutely amazing. A friend of mine loves it and wants to take me to see it.

I'd like to see 'An Inspector Calls' when it's on near me. I played the Inspector in an amateur production many years ago.

I really do need to go to the theatre more often.

We’re really lucky locally here … we have the Chichester Theatre

The Chichester theatre is renowned for quality productions.

I have a particular membership which gives priority bookings and discounts on plays during the year

It’s an absolute godsend to be in touch with culture of this particular art form.

I totally recommend agree with the thread and this particular art form, which is nourishing for the soul - particularly if you can go with someone which then gives a great opportunity to share a live moment in time.

I saw 'Dial M for Murder' many moons ago and, you're right' it is very good. I do love an Agatha Christie. I've been in a couple over the years. I normally end playing a doctor or a vicar!

Chams or Socials

T isn’t a theatre/musical person so I took him to see Moulin Rouge & he loved it. Have book again for the Birmingham production in October. Would love to see it in Paris.

Wish I had the time and money to go. It's not something I'd want to go on my own either.

If you had the time, money and companion, what would be your top 3 shows/plays you'd booked to see?

I think I would like to see

Phantom of the opera. A bit cliche, but I've only ever seen it televised. Which lacks some of the impact of seeing things live.

The Lion king. It's a bit old and may seem a bit childish but I've seen clips of it and looks amazing.

And the last one I don't know if people are going to class it as theater is Shen Yun.

I played an ugly sister in pantomime last Christmas.... Which was nice.

Dressing in drag was unusual but fun.

We're working on Aladdin for this Christmas in french and English.

I like the open mike standup nights but actual theatre is a rare thing in these parts.

Shen Yun is definitely theatre, I went last year, very pricey compared to what I normally pay but it was a special treat. I would recommend but i wouldn't see it again like I would with other shows.

Is this for amateur dramatic or are you in bigger productions?

I saw an amateur dramatic group do a Christmas Frankenstein pantomime, really funny.

Last thing I saw was Wicked which I really enjoyed. Wouldn't mind seeing the Tina Turner one. Has anyone mentioned that on this thread?

Does Magic Mike count as the theatre?! I once tried to get a man I was dating to come to that with me but strangely he said no.

This week I went to my daughter's university production - it's pretty much the same thing. Loved it.😄

Heck. The organisation behind Shen Yun is troublesome to say the very least!

It is I agree, but alas sadly not just them, many others are treated badly by other organisations in the name of entertainment

Just am drams at the moment but personally I won't stop until I've got a Palm d'Or on my mantle.

It's definitely a giggle.

I'd heard that before if I remember right. But I'll admit to being a bit ignorant about it.

I have written a script for Dick Whittington which an amateur dramatic group is performing at a local school today.

I'm sure. Hopefully Eddie Izzard's Bottom won't make a cameo appearance.

It sounds like marmite - Eddie said you either get it [and have an imagination] or you are a "purist" and have to leave

They were talking about it having extended nights somewhere because it did so well?

Are you thinking of going?

I am although tickets going quick-he's such a big name it will do well regardless of reviews. I'm actually going to see Hamlet at Stratford in a couple of weeks so it's been on my mind.

Is he doing it anywhere near you ?

Nice one Nero 😊 I've been sat on this one, waiting for 175 just to say, 'as the curtain closes' on such a great thread, it's great to see so much culture in what is oft just a debauched collection of horny folk!!
