You smell funny

North East Scotland, mostly

So I thought this was a universal thing, but a conversation I had earlier has made me doubt myself.

When someone’s ill, they usually smell a bit funny, don’t they? Not horrible, just a bit weird.

Don’t they?

Think if you are spending a lot of time in hospital then you often smell like the hospital. If you are at home ill, then maybe you aren't showering quite as often as if you are going out places and seeing people. Other than that it's not something I've noticed.

Probably depends on the illness. Never noticed it for a cold or covid but gonorrhoea can be a bit ripe.

My kid can smell my insulin as soon as I take the cap off the injector.

Can't say I've ever registered a different smell around someone who's sick, apart from, like, sweat from a fever.

I'm probably just used to it though. It's been 15ish years since I felt "well".

Yes. They smell off. I’m not sure I can explain it but they smell different.

My mum is really sensitive to it. She knows when I'm going to get tonsillitis about a day before I start feeling like I’m dying

Yes they do. I always knew when our children were ill by smell, especially if they had a sore throat.

Some breeds of dog are used to detect illness, including cancer I believe.

Dogs have been trained to sniff out certain types of cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, they can detect the smell at very early stages, even before it’s detectable by modern medicine. So this is definitely a thing.

I think it possibly might be a leftover from a more privative time. Animals will generally leave other sick animals alone and that's based on scent. It could be a case that they are giving off a smell that they are ill and you just happen to still be sensitive enough to pick it up. All speculation of course.

Yes. There's that almost fruity, artificially sweet tinge to their smell.

When I'm not attracted to people, like not in the slightest they have a faint smell of damp goat.

Smell is an odd one.

They do because dogs pick up on it.

When I had chicken pox in my 20’s I smelt revolting. I couldn’t stand the smell of myself. It wasn’t an unclean smell either. Weird to describe.

Look up Joy Milne. Her sense of smell has advanced the diagnosis of a list of diseases. She can smell some 12 years ahead of medical detection.

Animals picking up the smell of illness.

Dogs can detect cancer and other illnesses..

So we all smell differently while ill.

That’s unfair and inaccurate. I said mouldy wet carpet, not old

Our bodies can produce different aromas, relating to health and medical conditions.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is the long talked about pear drops smell, that can be noticed from breath.

Dogs have been able to spot smells from a range of cancers, including breast and prostate. Obviously their sense of smell is usually more advanced than ours but we also got attuned to how someone smells.

We excrete through our skin, breath and other systems. It's good to notice if you're smelling differently, though this can also be due to changes in our sense of smell etc

If someone has a cold Ior sore throat virus I've noticed a particular smell, it's actually the mucus that the body releases to try to fight the virus. So you can smell thier snot basically, gross but fascinating.
