I seen an advert for Screamboat, a horror movie based around the Steamboat Willie incarnation of Micky Mouse which became a public domain character last year when the copyright ran out. I've seen a whole bunch of these spring up featuring similar kids characters who have fallen into piblic use. Winnie the Pooh, Bambi and Pinnochio have films out or in production.

I get there's probably an audience for these but I feel like the boom of let's take beloved children character and make them dark and edgy is a bit naff and low hanging fruit.

There's actually a joint universe for some of these movies called the Twisted Childhood Universe 🤣

Titz Towers, North Notts

There are loads of creative people with new ideas. I'd like to see these given a chance instead of just reheating something

I agree. It almost feels like you're taking the innocence and the endearment out of things that are synonymous of our younger days - be it animated characters or facets of literature associated with childhood.

That's not me trying to be a 'fun sponge', nor do I pretend that I've seen some of these reimagined characters, but it's not for me when it becomes open season and a 'free for all' to redux into something more sinister.

I think it's ok in very small doses, but nothing more.

I wonder if it will be like that Dark Universe that fell on its arse. The Mummy with Tom Cruise was supposed to kick things off and then it didn't really take.
