I think 'video essay' is the hardest type of youtube content to make. More than music.. or anything else i can think of. And he excells at it.

The easiest I guess would be mukbang content where people react to food they eat.

Probably about 80% of my TV is YouTube nowadays. Nowhere else can I watch an overexcited historian tell me about seahenge, then a surly old builder explain where London stock bricks came from (and why they all look burned), then watch a man with very gnarled fingers fix an ice machine, then.. I dunno, someone iterating to build a tank out of Lego?

And then between all that you'll get some crazy art, some funny art, some weird art. There's a pixel art video of a dog explaining funk to a smaller dog. It's brilliant.

I guess it's an acquired taste, mind.

Yeah there's a time investment for sure. His stuff is so painstakingly detailed though.

I reckon it could easily take him a year or more just to make one video. And I do come away from his content feeling like I've learned something.

There’s no rhyme and reason to what I watch- I don’t have the attention span for long videos.

Mostly cooking (food porn

) and lately there’s been an influx of Asian/Russian immigrants to different countries in Latin America and they make videos (mostly about food) in perfect Spanish, local accent and all. Love that.

Right now I just cut my own hair following a tutorial. I was not going to pay the £60 a mobile hairdresser wanted to charge me.. they want to charge same as salons without the overheads! (I don’t go to salons either, lol- very rarely do I go, once every year)

And as mentioned before, lots and lots of music videos.

I love Youtube

I have quite the variety in YouTubers I follow whether it's Worldwide Darts for the latest darts reviews, Sam'sTrains for model railway reviews, official motorsport championship channels like the World Rally Championship or Ben Embling for his heritage railway & tourist attraction POVs.

But I have met a YouTuber before, Chris Eden-Green who is a independent film producer that has filmed a lot of heritage railway material of his own plus made programmes that are more watchable without falling asleep

A guy does engineering tutorials that are basically him talking through jobs he’s doing in a way that explains how he’s doing it and some tips on what not to do.

When he fucks up he leaves it in and explains why he fucked up, which is really good.

He puts up about 2 a week that are usually about 20 minutes or so in length which makes it easily watchable.

He has an ability to transfer knowledge in a way that is very natural, you don’t even realise you are learning, he’s not an engineering professional it something he just doe as a hobby himself.

Only trouble with it is he’s from Newcastle and you could do with subtitles sometimes

His gadget reviews are excellent, it's helped me when deciding to buy a new brewer or not. His own company's coffee is pretty great as well. I am absurdly envious that you know him though. Can you get him to make me a pourover? 😅😂

Wayne Goss (makeup artist. I like him as he doesn't spend 30 mins blabbing on before getting to the point and his tips are actually practical rather than only useful if you want that 'instagram' face )

Dark Corners Reviews (B-movie reviews, I love his sense of humour and on-going gags)

Abroad in Japan (English guy who went to teach in Japan and now lives there. he does everything from food, travel around Japan to silly stuff like teaching his Japanese friends English swear words or stopping at all 30 plus rail stations on the same circular line in Tokyo in a day)

YouTube definitely has a lot of kids content, driven by the lack of regulation vs TV making it very lucrative for advertisers (..yeh).

But a lot of content is directed at "adults", young and old and all in-between. The best content imo is when you get some super-specific nerd telling you about what they love, it's so captivating.

It's so much better than bullshit TV documentaries, where a generic presenter will spend an hour giving you 10 minutes worth of content without any real depth to anything because they need to reach such a wide audience. Some of these YouTubers are only pulling in 10k views per video, some have somehow reached millions of views without ever talking down to their audience - just getting really good at making you as excited as they are about their passion.

But there's a lot more shit to wade through until you can find the good stuff. In a lot of ways it's like discovering new music - you spend a lot of time listening to shit or mediocre music before you uncover a gem that resonates at just your frequency, and would never - ever - make it to Radio 2.

Music and YouTube both. Neither of these things has a clue what I want.

I watched this amazing video by Freya Holmér called "The Beauty of Bézier Curves" (go watch it, it's an amazing video and might con you into finding computer graphics interesting). YouTube then spent months - MONTHS - thinking I'm just really interested in how to draw a curve.

It reminds me of the early internet, where search engines were awful. Except we know they know how to do better and have the money to make it happen.

I have successfully reconfigured the wiring of an electric motor from 3 phase to single phase following a YouTube tutorial.

I have dismantled and replaced major components of my washing machine following a YouTube tutorial.

I have successfully cut threads on a lathe following a YouTube tutorial.

If you want to watch shit on there, then there is plenty to watch, but if you want to use the vast quantity of educational material that is in there to better yourself and to help save some money, you can do that just as easily. You don’t even have to sign up to anything, just turn it on and watch the tutorials.

But hey, you just carry on being ignorant, it’s way cooler.

They only show snippets on Tik Tok, which is never enough.

This is the essence of YouTube to me - watching people who are infectiously passionate about their chosen subject matter. It's just so much fun watching someone talk well and enjoy talking about something they love, and as a bonus I'll probably learn a bunch of stuff I didn't know and wouldn't have ever found out any other way.

I have successfully reconfigured the wiring of an electric motor from 3 phase to single phase following a YouTube tutorial.

I have dismantled and replaced major components of my washing machine following a YouTube tutorial.

I have successfully cut threads on a lathe following a YouTube tutorial.

But hey, you just carry on being ignorant, it’s way cooler.

So it has been of value to you. I hope you are not too upset that I expressed my ignorant opinion.

We love "Campervibe".

Louise and Emily, a married couple of van lifers that have bought and are renovating an old cottage in Ireland.

Emily is a giggling snack bandit, ex RN & Louise is the 'builder', a very talented carpenter that can turn her hand to almost anything.

They're living in their self converted van with "Summer" the cat and AJ the dog.

AJ is just amazing, having lost one of his legs to cancer last year.

Louise is a great film maker and the banter is really funny.

But I won't divulge anymore info..

I wouldn't class myself as my favourite youtuber though I think my content is good (& quite hard to do- at the risk of sounding arrogant.)

As I've mentioned above, when I watch a youtuber like hbomberguy I think he's a good example of how far you can take youtube videos as an art form.
