I love this Granny!!

So many influencial women in the world.

I'm actually thinking specifically of a lady who set up a small charity to help school children and struggling families to have school uniforms... She had a vision and has helped thousands of families since she set it up ♥️

Having the right school uniform, in wearable condition helps children's development by removing stigmas around perceptions of poverty and reduces chances of bullying for being different and also helps the child to learn as they feel that they belong and are equals to their fellow students.

On March 8, 1908, women workers in the needle trades marched through New York City's Lower East Side to protest child labour and sweatshop working conditions, and demand women's suffrage. Beginning in 1910, March 8 became annually observed as International Women's Day.

I'll start by thinking about those women ....

I hope you don't mind the sentimentality Crumpster. There are so many I'll think about but one in particular.

Lickety - it's been almost a year. Will be. The difference she made to so many lives, the passion she had for campaigning for those oft overlooked. The time she had for people - work and personal life. Time is one of the most valuable things you can give to people isn't it?

And her love for other women. Lifting them up. In a professional capacity and personally. When women champion other women, celebrate their achievements, don't see each other as competition, can say when they're being a twunt yet still hold space for them? It's a truly beautiful way of being.

Lickety embodied that.

Amongst many, I'll be thinking of Malala Yousafzai, a fearless advocate for girls' education, faced immense challenges when the Taliban banned girls from attending school in her hometown. Surviving a targeted attack, Malala's resilience and outspokenness earned her the Nobel Peace Prize at the age of 17. Her ongoing fight for education continues to inspire people worldwide.

The Deep Dark Woods

This is such a great thread. There are so many inspirational women in the world, but I will be thinking of someone particularly close me my heart, my nana, as next week will be three years since her passing ♥️

She came over to Manchester from Ireland when she was 18 in the 1940s, made a life for herself and supported countless others in the Irish community when they moved over here to settle and build their lives, both financially, practically and emotionally. For many years she and my grandad struggled to conceive and had countless miscarriages and sadly a son who didn't live more than a day, but she was so maternal and loved children and would provide unpaid care for many of her friends children before going off to work in the evenings herself. Eventually my mum came along when she was 45 (a miracle).

When she passed I was devasted, but one of the things that gave me comfort was just how many people told our family how she was like a surrogate mother to them and how much they loved and cared for her and all the things she has done for them over their lives with nothing asked for in return.

There are lots of women who do great and wonderful things that go down in the history books (and rightly so!) but there are also so many women who do silent work in the background to keep our communities and families together. Mothers, grandmother, aunties, daughters, sisters, friends etc. It's nice to remember and appreciate all of these women too and the unappreciated work they do.

I’ll be spending the day doing what I like with gratitude for all the women I have in my life who bring me joy, teach me and help me grow. I might even call my sister so she can tell me I’m a sap ♥️

Willy's thread has made me think of my Nana, who passed away when I was nine.

Had she been born a generation or two later, her life could have been so different. She remained in an abusive marriage until her death because the stigma of divorce and her financial dependence on my grandad left her with few other options. I'm so grateful to live in a time and place where women now have financial independence and community support if they need to leave an abusive relationship.

She was a handsome woman just thirty-five who was spoken to in town by very few

She managed a late evening business like most of the town wished they could do

I learned all the things that a man should know

From a woman not approved of I suppose

She died knowing someone really loved her from life's bramble bush I picked a rose

Changing your ways, changing those surrounding you

Changing your ways, more than any man can do

Open your heart, show him the anger and pain, so you heal

Maybe he's looking for his womanly side, let him feel

You had to be so strong

And you do nothing wrong, nothing wrong at all

We're gonna break it down

We're gonna shake it down, shake it all around

Great shout. I m not that much into famous women or celebrity etc ....... I think more about the unsung women who make great strides and have been unrecognised. A case in point is all those women inventors in the 17/1800's who couldn't patent their invention because of discriminations and the items were patented by their husbands who reaped the accolades and no one could confess that it was 'the missus' ...... people would have laughed or been outraged.

Mine would have to be the Blood sisters and all the women who helped during the HIV epidemic in the 80’s and onwards. When most people had turned their back a major group in the US called the blood sisters came together and started a blood drive which managed to get 130 successful donnations and would then go on to help people with the condition. As well as the physical help they provided to patients many lesbians during the time also helped to reduce the stigma and homophobia that was attached to the virus.

There were very similar movements in the uk too and the TV show “its a sin” shows this quite well when people grouped together to provide support for people with the condition get help in a very difficult time.

For me this is very important history both for women and the LGBTQIA+ community and shouldn’t be forgotten
