Apparently it's reported that young women (40% I think) are afraid of men the same age.

I'd this due to toxic masculinity?

It's probably more due to scaremongering on top of personal experiences 💜

Who knows - probably?

But having seen the worst of it online with the likes of the Tate brothers and others, it’s no wonder women are choosing to be single than deal with the stress of whether a guy is going to turn out decent or a massive man-baby with anger issues.

Does it not give any info in the report you've seen?

Seems odd they'd quote a statistic with a link to data, which would hopefully identify the cause of responses.

Otherwise it's not a very useful statistic. 🤷‍♂️

A quick Google provides a link to an article in the telegraph 2 days ago where the headline includes the words 'toxic masculinity', so I'm guessing that's where the OP's question comes from.

Can't read the article though so haven't seen where the info comes from, how reliable it is or what the survey sample size was.

I'm not signing up to the torygraph so maybe someone else knows more. 🤔

Was this 40% self reported?

Or is it like when men tell me I'm afraid of their confidence or massive dick or legendary skills, when actually there's no fear, I just don't want to deal with them 💜

.. a Whitestone Insight survey commissioned by the think tank found that 62 per cent of young women believe most young men are “pretty frightening”.

More than two-fifths of young men (41 per cent) agree with their female counterparts.

The finding features in Lost Boys, a study published by the CSJ that details the plight of Britain’s boys and young men.

Not only are males now falling behind females in education and the workplace, but they are also increasingly viewed with suspicion by women.

‘Angry men is a disaster’

The report warns: “A generation of unhappy and angry men is a disaster for both the sexes.”

So-called “toxic masculinity” has been fuelled by misogynists such as Andrew Tate and follows a surge in violence against women and girls (VAWG), with cases of stalking, harassment, sexual assault and domestic violence up 37 per cent over the past five years.

....

Don't judge me. The day job requires me to work with that rag.

Thanks. And i knew there'd be a reason you had access. 😂😂

I've seen this kind of thing before and it always makes me sad that it's described as 'the plight' of young men.

To me the solution is simple. Men can easily choose not to be that kind of man. It's not compulsory nor is anyone forced into negative attitudes and behaviour.

Just be better. Don't be a dick. Simple as really.

It's akin to the old trope you read on here of 'all men being tatted with the same brush'. Don't be that guy and nothing anyone else does will affect you or reflect on you.

The study also expressed concern at the diminishment of traditional masculinity in the media and society.

Courage no longer valued

More than four in 10 of the public, 43 per cent, say that traditional masculine values such as courage, resilience and competitiveness are not valued by society.

Half of young men believe that the media are too negative, with men being “too often” shown as “a bit pathetic”.

Pornography is another reason for the damage done to the relationship between the sexes. A clear majority (60 per cent) believe that porn is undermining relationships. This increases to two-thirds when asking young people.

Andy Cook, chief executive of the Centre for Social Justice, said: “We have been so careless in our downgrading of the traditional masculine virtues that we are in danger of leaving a whole generation behind.

“Restoring the hope that has been lost among boys and young men is not to undermine girls and young women, rather it will restore trust and overcome this terrible sense of fear that is so corrosive.”

I think this is half the problem.

I've never considered those values to be the sole remit of men. I know many courageous, resilient and competitive women. Maybe people need to realise times have long changed and that 'traditional' notions were never a positive in the first place. 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure if attributing everything to toxic masculinity is very productive, for anyone, unless it leads to further discourse.

The Deep Dark Woods

That is a really shocking and sad statistic. But also doesn't shock me. Violence against women and girls is on the rise, misogynistic ideas are on prevalent on social media. Young boys on Social Media have no hope when the algorithms are bombarding them with damaging content, and access to violent pornography skews ideas about real sex and relationships.

They are told that feminism is an attack on men and masculinity, and confuse women wanting to feel safe with misandry. I am by no means a prude by any stretch of the imagination but these ideas are so damaging for young people, and I feel sorry for teachers and parents having to try and tackle these ideas before they take root.

I think there's been a real lean to the right among younger people with the advent of people like Andrew Tate. He's (somehow) very popular and his ideas have disseminate widely despite how dangerous they are to young men's development

❤️

Men can be who they want to be. As with any choice, that will lead to reactions from others. Unfortunately, that is what some men are choosing to do, and choosing to blame anyone but themselves.

Note I said "some" men. "Some", for those who might find this upsetting, is not a synonym for "all". And I'm sure, in case it needs to be said to assuage some, that some women, non-binary, and trans people also make destructive and antisocial choices.

I don't think competitiveness is an intrinsically positive virtue anyway. That's a more post-capitalist perception.

I agree it's all just about controversy these days, it generates traffic, which generates sales. Profit is good, so whatever leads to profit must be good.

It's more ingrained in our culture now, it's surpassed anything religion ever managed to achieve.

Nor do I, but I'm not going to denigrate healthy competition.

The problem is when it's destructive (to anyone, male, female, or otherwise).

I think some people get caught into a trap that things like this are *all* men can be - and then criticise people who hope for more possibilities for men and boys.

Like women, they can be whatever they want to be (including these tropes, but not just these tropes). To say otherwise - and to inflict the resulting angst on others - is what's toxic.

Not sure if I classify as young anymore at 26😭

I’m 100% never afraid of young men. Just think that 99% of them are twats!

I would say it’s the polar opposite.. I’m into older men, but if I wasn’t.. I am intimidating to men my age!

"Apparently it's reported that young women (40% I think) are afraid of men the same age.

I would say almost entirely due to Social media and the research back this up.

Firstly younger people are having less real world interactions and way more virtual ones, so their evidence base for real world behaviour is shrinking.

Secondly but linked to the above, Social media highlights and amplifies extremes of behaviour and beliefs, so people using social media heavily absorb the worst examples of human behaviour, in this case male violence and abuse.

An illustration of this would be the viral scenario of whether a woman would rather meet a bear or a strange man when on her own. Although the objective evidence clearly shows a woman would be far more at risk of harm from any bear than the average man, a lot of women chose the bear, many of them in all seriousness.
