I just walked Carmelita Spats and Spiderman to school. We passed Mario, Sonic and at least two Harry Potter's.

What's the best costume you've seen today, or you've worn?

Youngun has gone to school dressed as Snuffkin from the Moomins this morning.

The fact that it's World Book Day is entirely coincidental

Years ago a friend had a genius idea.

They printed pictures of toasters, kettles, hairdryers and gym equipment, laminated them and stuck them to their child with safety pins.

And sent them to school as the argos catalogue. 🤷‍♂️😂

"My granddaughter has gone as belle from beauty and the beast"

Going to world book day as a character that famously loved reading is next level costume!

WBD upsets me. It shows how few parents and children read books.

My eldest did Percy Jackson last year. Easiest costume for us ever - he just wore normal clothes and put a pen in his pocket

My boy wanted to go as Captain Underpants, but I siad the principal and teachers wouldn't appreciate him running around in his underwear shouting "Tra la la" all day.

I make sure to read to him every night, it's so important and just gives that time to cuddle as the day has slowed down at that stage. Generally then if there is anything that has bothered him during the day he'll talk about it at that stage as he is relaxed, calm, amd knows he's in a safe space.

It's literally the reason why such an event takes place? To raise literacy rates amongst children and families. Plenty of news stories and studies have shown that a million kids in the UK have no books of their own in their homes. That £1 voucher to allow them to buy a book for themselves could make a huge difference.

I got him a camp half blood t-shirt which has instantly become his favourite item of clothing, did Harry potter last year, he got in trouble with his sister for trying the avada kedavra on her repeatedly...

We have a Peter Pan, and Belle (reading Rapunzel 🤭) today. He did want Horrid Henry, but I only remembered it was WBD at 7AM! We couldn't improvise, and Tesco had sold out

I was always a cop out, I'd get mixed up with dates or totally forget it was world book day until the last minute. So last minute ideas were a pan full of random stuff and normal clothes - George's marvelous medicine. Normal clothes and a buckets full of dinosaurs - harry and his bucket full of dinosaurs, normal but more raggedly clothes with black smudges on the face and a polishing cloth - Cinderella....

I think it puts too much on parents.

Why not fold up a piece of paper as a hat and put your fave book title on the front.

oR just make a headband with a pic of your fave book character on

or make a fuck off big badge with three books you've read this month on .....

it's to raise dosh innit ...... that's all that matters.

What's with the trend for dressing as a crayon this year?! I think I've missed a major literary "thing" for children

I do agree with GC though. I totally support WBD and encouraging reading. I'd be a shit educator if I didn't. But hearing some of the stress it's caused parents in our child's class around dressing up, I don't think that's fair or worth it. Dressing up seems to get more and more elaborate each year and it's expensive and stressful and actually actively horrible for some children.
