Return of the living thread

What's with all the old threads coming back on the forum lately? Like I can understand a thread that's say, 2 weeks old returning but some of these are months or years old.

Half the people commenting on them aren't even on the site any more. Is it a joke I've missed or something?

Yes I think there was a sort of thing going round trying to resurrect the oldest thread

It happens now and then. People dredging up threads from years ago because they can't think of anything new to post

I'm not sure, but it's quite disruptive to the forums.

Bump with caution ⚠️

A user began bumping ancient threads yesterday then someone else filled half the lounge with them.

Attention seeking I guess.🤷‍♂️

At least they haven't duplicated threads, which many people do without searching the forums first for previous threads. It's just weird to see so many UNLOS posters comments.

Everything we write is definitely going in a library somewhere.

I think someone might be very bored or they are the user who started the thread & have come back with a different username 🤷🏻‍♀️

I can't understand why Fab would want to take up server space by keeping forum threads that go back years. What's the point?! 🤷

I'm thinking that threads are being bumped due to the recent conversations about how changed the forums are and they have resurrected the threads for comparison

The text-only format of the fab forums takes up only the tiniest amount of server space. I rather suspect that it would be possible to archive the entire history of all these forums on a single micro SD card.

Say that an average forum post is about 500 characters (might even be an overestimate). Maximum thread length is 175 posts, most never get this far. This means that an entire thread can be stored in less than 100 kilobytes.

Micro SD cards are now available with capacity of 128 gigabytes for maybe £20 (and this figure will seem ludicrously expensive when someone reads this thread again in a couple of years time!).

128 GB = 128,000,000,000 bytes

100 kB = 100,000 bytes

So the SD card can hold over a million maximum length forum threads! Or probably at least 10 million typical length threads.

How many new threads are started every day? Maybe a few hundred at most. Even if it's a thousand every day, it would take 10,000 days to create 10 million threads. So perhaps 30 years?

The entire fab forums history on a chip of plastic smaller than a postage stamp...

Basically it's cheaper to keep everything forever than it would be to review and delete old content!
