The 40 year old athlete

Who is the greatest 40 athlete you’ve ever seen?

Is anyone who has lived to or being 40 more appreciative of how they’re able to perform at such an elite level at that age?

When I’m 30 I’ll be happy if I can run the parent race.

Not an ‘athlete’ as such but if we are talking sportsmen then Ronnie O’Sullivan deserves an honourable mention. His longevity is amazing. Near the top of the game for 3 decades.

He has taken an incredibly hard game and often makes it look ridiculously easy.

Lewis Hamilton is 40 I think so s Cristiano Ronaldo. I don't know if they're the best but they're pretty darn good. Paula Radcliffe is 51

I'm impressed by the dedication they've shown to maintaining their fitness but not because of their age. At 40 we were both fit and very physically able. I genuinely don't get this idea that people in their 40s and beyond are declining rapidly. The doesn't happen until probably 70s if you're lucky enough to have no health problems. Obviously you slow down but if you maintain overall fitness it's a gradual process

I agree but I think to maintain the performance levels of an athlete in their peak 27-32 I think is very very impressive. Most people aren’t as elite at 40 as 15 years prior and most athletes in many sports are retired by 40

I think the ones who maintain their performance possess a dedication that most others don't have and drew a very lucky number when it came to physicality. I agree it's impressive but without patronising at all I think most younger people believe that age has a far greater effect more rapidly on one's body than it actually does in most cases.

This is going to be met with a lot of derision but you did say athlete rather than sportsperson... So I'm going to do with The Undertaker and Shawn Michaels. Both put on arguably their best matches in their 40s and although wrestling is predetermined, for their bodies to keep up and do what they did was pretty phenomenal for me to see.

For actual sportspeople, Jimmy Anderson would be a good shout for being able to maintain his consistency for as long as he did.

I was just smiling to myself.

The job Mr N worked in involved being very physically fit. He often had to show apprentices how to do certain tasks that involved careful manoeuvring of very heavy things, it took three of them to even lift it. He would walk over, lift it with one arm and position it .

Yeah, which is quite interesting as he seemed to want to prolong his International career by not playing franchise cricket or even limited overs cricket for England but I imagine quite a few cricketers will still play once they retire from Internationals

I train BJJ, only as a hobby and to keep fit, some of the most hardest rolls I’ve ever had have been with fighters over 50.

Last week I rolled with a 60+ year old, and he made me his bitch, mentally and physically, I had no answer to anything other than to tap out and cry 😂

There's a few footballers I'd put up their like Paolo Maldini and Ryan Giggs. To be able to compete at the highest level at 40 is pretty impressive.

Taker's a good shout. Jeff Hardy for me! Also, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo still got it, Idc.

There's a guy in his 70s here smashing lifting records! So he takes the crown.

Zlatan also needs a shout out as well. Had a serious knee injury at 35 and still came back to win Serie A with AC Milan at 40.

I was a proper athlete at age 45. Competed and everything.

Then the fucking pandemic happened and fucked me up mentally and that stopped, but my body was in its best shape ever, performance-wise, in my mid to late 40s.

I was still competing at a good level at nearly 40.

You get experience and technique that helps you conserve energy and strength.

It's hard work though keeping a world ranking with young ones at your heels

Understand the recency bias in all this, but Stanley Matthews played in the top flight when he was 50 and played his last game for England when he was 42.

That's impressive in anyone's book. Incredible achievement.

Shout out to him. I think his level at 40 is lower than Lebron’s at 40. But still extremely high

Its astonishing in an era with no sports science or proper fitness coaches, and playing in a position where he got kicked like hell !
