Our car won't do that. It dips the lights automatically in lit areas and when there is oncoming traffic.

I'm in India at the moment. This habit is an epidemic here. L

3rd rock from the sun

I was behind a driver on Saturday night that slowed down when another car approached them. They then actually stopped fully when a lorry came around the corner ahead of them and didn't move till it passed us

Was that because of they couldn't see due to those fucking awful neon headlights ?

Next Door

You don't even need to have the car lights on full beam, many car headlights glare too bright already.

It puts me off driving at night especially a roads without street lighting

Paris, New York, Hong Kong and Havant

If you’re in a car that’s quite low down to the road it’s worse than being higher up than in a big SUV for example … to “be blinded by the light” (possibly a good song title here???)

Not sure about a jail sentence but certainly it would be nice to retaliate with that secret switch on the dash board called “fry you bastards fry” !

That would be quite illuminating OP?

I think this height thing is probably key - cars are getting bigger and that height gain is in the newer cars with the brighter lights. Combining the two and you have a real problem for lower cars.

It shouldn’t be a factor if the MOT has been done correctly, the beams are supposed to be aligned to be within set parameters.

My MOT guy used to have it marked on a wall, and with the vehicle a set distance from the wall they had to be within the markings, so a higher vehicle would have to have a steeper angle on the beam to be compliant.

I drive a convertible small car,and it's very low.As you say,SUV etc lights shine right in the rear view mirror.Luckily, don't need to drive far,at night.

I literally had to come to almost a full stop last night. If there was a car behind me it would probably crash into me

This is dangerous, even the Yanks are getting fed up with it.

I'm always moaning, even as a pedestrian I get blinded by these , I have to dip my rear mirror and door mirrors too (why can't these dip too?)

https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/news/motoring-news/rac-calls-for-government-action-on-headlight-glare/

Will this get me a ban?

This is like staring into the retina burning brightness that welders have to wear eye protection. Yellow driving lenses, won't help you see beyond the laser zapping beams. Sunnys are normally the best protection, but not at night, not like this.

This is a global problem.

How many people who own these eyesight thieving vehicles, have actually stared into their own beams from the approximate height and position, both full and dipped beams? To do it properly sit on chair as if you were in a ordinary saloon or estate and see how much vision and visibility of what's behind/beside it.

Don't be selfish, allow other road users

to see as well. Non LED vehicles will fail the MOT if they are fitted post market, so that's not a level playing field.

Power without control is dangerous.
