Ch 4 have outraged some by putting trigger warnings before some episodes of Father Ted and the It Crowd.

Is it going too far?

Are we going to need to start putting up trigger warnings for trigger warnings? If people are ‘outraged’ and triggered by a trigger warning I’d say yes we’ve gone too far

Well that's all it ever is, isn't it.

TV: "hey this sitcom episode is about a death in the family"

Someone with a recently deceased relative: "oh thanks I would rather avoid that at the moment"

I think they are unnecessary on comedies, however I think the term ‘snowflake’ is also unnecessary as I don’t see how name calling helps discourse and thoughtful debate.

I think it shows responsibility on the part of the media who choose to offer trigger warnings.

Depending on the content of the show people can then choose to watch it or not.

Times change, this is one of them, not the world going mad or being 'snowflakes'.

Some people have experienced incredibly difficult trauma and if trigger warnings help even just one person in some way then I'm all for it.

Every episode of Emmerdale has a trigger warning, I don't watch but it makes we wonder how much it's changed since the days of Grandad, Joe and Annie. The warnings really have no impact on me at all so I'm happy for them to continue.

Loads of them have that on tv, films as well. I get it and tend to not let it bother me, but I definitely dont watch it with the kids, as they get really outraged by the language we found acceptable as humour.

Why would it be too far? What's the harm in giving people a heads up that they might find the content they are about to watch, inappropriate? Some people find them very helpful. I find it more ironic that people have an issue with trigger warnings and throw around the word 'snowflake'

"Try watching The Young Ones on Iplayer. That's hardly anything left of it. "

This is different from trigger warnings, and while it annoys me it also underlines why it's worth buying things you like instead of relying on streaming - if the TV companies don't want to be associated with something they'll just cut it out, and they're a private business, so they can.

Trigger warnings are just a few seconds at the beginning of a show, they affect nobody except those who find the warnings helpful, and whiney little babies who can't stand the idea that the TV companies might be thinking of anyone else except them.

Genuine "replacing the stairs with a ramp has RUINED my LIFE I can't BELIEVE this WOKE NONSENSE" energy.

I don’t mind trigger warnings, they’re just a heads up regarding difficult subjects or themes that may be part of a storyline. What I don’t like is when scenes are cut out or dialogue changed. This ruins productions in my opinion.

I also read there were lot of complaints about the silencing of the audio during the live Brits awards if anything got too rude.

Personally I don't really care. If people really get offended by a piece of text on a screen though then I think that says more about them than the people who may need a trigger warning.

I think trigger warnings are pointless as watching gore is actually pretty fun, especially that liveleak stuff, but I don't understand people being triggered by trigger warnings. Just don't watch the show if it hurts your feelings so much.

There's an episode where he pulls his eyes back and pretends to be a Chinese man, played for laughs. Instead of cutting it out, at the beginning of the episode they display the warning:

"This episode was made in 1998 and contains language and racial impersonation which some viewers may find offensive"

So far as I know that's the only episode with the warning.

It's actually insane that people care so much about a bit of text giving a heads up that certain content may not be suitable for them. Like, why let it bother you so much? It doesn't take anything away from the actual show for people who still want to watch it.

I think it's reasonable to have them in advance and throughout the entire show, as people may start watching after the show started and miss the initial one.

Being able to broadcast carries responsibilities, so appropriate warnings should be given, guided by a national body

"What do they warn you about? Love the shows but not watched them since those warnings were in place.

Does it say 'If you're too dumb to understand satire and farce perhaps watch Love Island instead you big baby ?'

No. He’s just told you what it said. Why are you so wound up that times have changed change with them. You’ll have more peace 😂🤣

Is peace the answer to perceived nonsense? that’s the real question.

It can be because realistically what else are they gonna do about it? Complain on the Internet? Oh wait...

Well it does make content for a forum.

Apologies Nicole. I hear they live in a land of great peace and untold joy that I can only envy while I grind my dentures in anger.

It's not just an age thing, or changing with the times, it's giving a fuck about other people's feelings and appreciating they might differ from our own...Ie, some people value a trigger warning, its not that difficult to understand.

But then you're just choosing not to see the full picture and depth of the attitudes of people who are opposed to those warnings. Should there be warnings at the front of comedy shows of yesteryear saying ‘caution, this show may make you laugh at things you have been told by others you should not laugh at’.

My own approach to these things is to just watch it and either laugh cos it’s funny or stop watching because I don’t find it funny.

But because time does not stop, there is never a point at which any opinion, fashion, social more is fixed. Which is why holding different opinions on change is important, because nothing dates quicker than today. Genuinely young people (under 20s) are already mocking many of the strongest held pieties of Gen Z and much of that generation's world view will age like milk on the carpet, as those of my (our ?) generation did.

Just going with the flow usually gets you washed away pretty quickly.

Not sure anyone would disagree that a spectrum of opinions is important.

Nothing is fixed, but I do think certain changes should be banked, which is why I gave the example of norms of dress. Things which seem really normal to us, but would have outraged previous generations.

I'm not sure if it's "going with the flow" or just accepting that society and expectations evolve, normally for the better (I'm struggling to think of a societal change in my lifetime I'd reverse). Some of the reactions I see today are just old(er) people grumbling because things aren't *exactly* as they were in the "good old days" (whenever they were), which feels a bit myopic, but it's their choice.

Why adapt when you can hate on younger people for being soft?

You should express that as a meme, you'd get loads of likes.

"What do they warn you about? Love the shows but not watched them since those warnings were in place.

But the pope might be upset by all of them.

That would be an ecumenical matter "

Careful now.

If you're easily offended, you're easily manipulated. Trigger warnings are fine, it might bring about a conversation as to why something is (for lack of a better term) problematic. People are all to ready to censor which in my opinion is worse. Context and nuance is missing from a lot of our conversations these days.

I remember when the Little House on the Prairie books were removed from some digital book stores because of "racially charged language", they're set in Kansas between 1874-1875 sl*very had only ended 10 years before that, I'd be more surprised if there weren't any.

"I think it shows responsibility on the part of the media who choose to offer trigger warnings.

Depending on the content of the show people can then choose to watch it or not.

Times change, this is one of them, not the world going mad or being 'snowflakes'.

Some people have experienced incredibly difficult trauma and if trigger warnings help even just one person in some way then I'm all for it.

"

100%. It may not protect me, but it may protect someone else from trauma.

The net effect on me is zero. On someone who may have been traumatised because of the content, the net effect can be considerable.

I am not inconvenienced by something which does not impact me, but can help someone else. I'm rather pleased for them, to be honest.

In Spain they have a little box in the corner with the age rating for the show, on all of the program. Trigger warnings are useless for channel hoppers...

Also, I imagine the channels have to protect themselves from being sued or prosecuted for causing offence?

To be honest it's probably a good idea to warn people at least it gives them a choice to view it or not. As a fan of Jimmy Carr, Ricky Gervais and Frankie Boyle I tend to not find offence in many things so it won't affect me but hey ho

In 2023 a meta analysis of studies into trigger warnings was published in a leading psychology journal. In summary it found:

-Trigger warnings don't reduce the emotional distress of experiencing graphic content.

-The warnings don't lead people to avoid or opt out of graphic content.

-Trigger warnings do lead to more anticipatory anxiety before viewing graphic content.

-Some people were more likely to watch content they were warned about.

So basically not only don't they serve the stated purpose, but they increase anxiety and distress in those disposed to those conditions.

"In 2023 a meta analysis of studies into trigger warnings was published in a leading psychology journal."

I've actually read that meta-analysis and it really missed the point of trigger warnings. Trigger warnings aren't a mental health tool, they're an agency tool. They're a component of the modern consent culture - "this has x in it, do you want to watch x".

That's why they're vilified by people who would like to return to low/no consent cultural practices, either because they think that removing consent practices makes you more resilient or because they just don't like the precedent that people are entitled to withdraw consent.

That's why we're having this conversation right now, and why we seem to be having all of these eerily similar conversations. It's liberal ideas vs conservative dogma, over and over. A "culture war", if you will.

That's all it ever is.

Carlisle usually

When Daniel Sloss did X, that show was always shown with a trigger warning.

There were more complaints about there being a trigger warning than there were about the content.

As someone who does have trauma associated with that particular trigger warning, I appreciate it. It doesn't stop me from watching something ever. I heartily recommend the show to absolutely everyone, including other survivors when they're through the worst of the process. (It's free to stream on his website currently.)

But the warning allows me to make sure I'm in the right frame of mind, I can come back and watch it when I'm ready rather than being surprised by it in a vulnerable moment. When you're still in the middle of dealing with the police and direct aftermath, you certainly don't want to suddenly be struck by that while just trying to relax and be entertained.

Some days it's just not what you want to deal with. If I want something light and fluffy and a trigger warning comes up for something that is going to bring my mood down when I'm actively looking for something soft. Why is providing information so people can make informed choices such a bad thing?

Why do people care so much about a few words on a screen for a matter of seconds that can make other people's lives easier? Given how much screen time is taken up with advertising, credits, themes and intros. Why are trigger warning so very offensive to so many people?

Trigger warnings are OTT - and actually studies have found that adding them makes people more likely to be offended vs not having them at all.

Worse trigger warning I’ve seen was for the movie “Blink Twice” where the warning spoiled the whole plot twist of the movie.

^^ I would say that one possibility is that they don't want to be reminded that bad things happen to some people. It keeps them safe from their fears.

"When Daniel Sloss did X, that show was always shown with a trigger warning.

Who said they are offensive? I don't like them because they are intrusive, unnecessary for adults who can make their own decisions, and research suggests ineffective.

Not liking or not agreeing with something doesn't mean you find it offensive.

They're easily offended and like to make it everyone else's problem
