Smoking is certainly less popular, therefore I would imagine having a fetish involving smoking could well also be less popular.

People smoking isn’t something I have a fetish for, nor do I have any problems with people who wish to smoke.

It was highly successful. The idea were based on Freud's work, marketing to base animal desires - the ID.

In a world where we are constantly fed rules on how to behave - super ego. We subconsciously seek ways in which to express repressed desires.

According to Freud anyway, right or wrong theoretically - it seems to work. Sex does sell.
