Do you think media beauty standards impact your type?

I was watching a TikTok of someone blind ranking some celebs and it got me thinking- so many people find similar people attractive. So yeah do you think it impacts you and your attraction to people?

Nope. I tend to go on someone’s vibe/sexiness aura and not how beautiful they are.

I mean I fancy the arse off of Paul Kaye, and he’s not stereotypically gorgeous. Neither is Jean Reno and I fancy him as well.

Nah. I dont really have much social media and i dont pay attention to celebs or what not. Ill admit if someone is good looking but it has no impact on whom id be attracted to on an every day basis

I think we are all force fed beauty standards which leave many of us feeling we aren't good enough.

That in turn does have an impact on who we are then willing to try and attract.

However everyone is unique and likes different things. I'm not sure I've ever craved the conventional "good looking " all the time

I'm not sure of the impact on me, because I joyfully fuck all kinds of people, however I have noticed an impact in how others view me.

I'm a huge supporter of body positivity, but on social media and in advertising, it's had a counter-effect of creating an acceptable version of a plus-size body, and I don't meet it. I've had guys actually say to me "You're a lot fatter than I thought you'd be" when we've met, because they hadn't paid enough attention to my body photos and made an assumption of what plus-size means (generous hips, small waist, little to no tummy, a size 16-18 rather than 20+).

Agreed they are different around the world although some western/ imperialist standards about fairer skin still remain. And colourism is still such a huge thing in different communities. But I agree with the whole- I’m no different to lots of people thing.

I’d like to believe I’m not easily influenced but I know that realistically I probably am fairly easily influenced. Beauty I think is also impacted by the different standards for different groups/ places though like you said. Growing up- who was attractive to my friends and peers was different to when my influence was more diverse. Nia long was all mine and my mates’s ultimate fantasy and I met people at uni who didn’t know who she was

It doesn't impact my type but I've never really been one for convential stereotypes of who is 'attractive' or what kind of body shape is supposedly aesthetically pleasing.

But then a quick glance at the 'hot pics' section on Fab and it's evident that for many there's definitely a pattern.

Likewise mainstream media. When did you not see a carbon copy man or woman appearing on Love Island, MAFS or any of the BS 'reality' shows?

Likewise social media. Likewise printed media.

People are bombarded with visuals of what's deemed 'attractive' and desirable almost 24/7, so it's only natural that stereotypes and generalisations occur.

I'm too old for that shit. But then I pretty much felt the same in my 20's, when fortunately social media wasn't around.

I'd hate to be a teenager today. 🤷‍♂️

That’s the thing about being influenced. We don’t know when it’s happening. Yes media does play a huge part but also socially. When I was at high school, everyone fancied Russell Howard. When I moved away I was shocked to learn he was not the face of male beauty to the rest of the country. Shocked. Lots of factors contribute to how we see beauty. I don’t think it’s stops at people either. Where I live, a G class Mercedes is a farmers car, whereas in some cities it’s viewed differently

It's safe to say that's a solid no. The people I find attractive aren't the cookie cutter societally conventional attractive people. That really does nothing for me. Those I do find hot? People like... Jay Rayner. Solid nose, bit of a prick, beautiful hair, loves food, loves waffling, thinks I have a "great" voice. Really solid nose. I could have said someone far worse so be thankful OP.

You know when there's a certain desirable archetype that's presented and really catches on? Like with Shonda Rimes and her leading men. Or Aaron Pierre. Or someone from ACOTAR. They become the new *hot* for a brief spell.

Have you ever seen booktok? Terrifying.

Like Obi said above, I do think that there is generally an influence. The comments on what's attractive, how people treat people differently... it happens. It's not surprising it does.

I don't think so, although I tend not to pay too much attention to celebs 🤷🏼‍♀️ (Except Aaron Taylor-Johnson, he can get in my bed anytime! 😈)

But I can see how social media and celebs would have that effect, just look at the body shaming plastered everywhere during the 90's and early 00's *shudders* 😬

I've seen news articles where they've sent the same photo of a man and woman to different countries and asked them to Photoshop the bodies to what the countries deem as attractive, so I look at my body and think 'hmmm my body is good I just happen to be in the wrong country '

Good question. I have my celebs that will always rank highly for me, it rarely changes, and some are the regular names on 'Top sexiest...' lists. But then I also don't remotely fancy some of the popular names that are pushed in our faces - Timotheé Chalamet, Ian Somerewhatshisname, Ryan Reynolds.

I think the mass media did/does a similar thing.

Like, I remember everyone deriding 80s hair and makeup during my 90s/00s youth. I'm sure it's because of the fashion influences at the time, on television etc

Well yes but anyone that fancies a Black person and a white person will have people that will look extremely different. For example if I fancy Brad Pitt and Michael B Jordan- those are two completely different looking men who are both generally considered to be attractive by people who tend to find people within those races attractive. If that makes sense?

Compared to if I said I find Olivia Coleman and Sabrina Carpenter attractive where one is widely accepted to be attractive/ sexy and the other is less often seen in that way

In part this is inspired by the feeling that very often (not always) people are able to list a load of celeb crushes and usually people agree and will comment that they do. I find Tom Hardy or Tom Hiddleston (or replace with various women usually mentioned online) attractive and people will be like - ooo yes! I agree.

These standards of beauty also impacts how people desire to look in terms of how they style their hair or their clothes etc. but I get it if people aren’t impacted by anything - it’s a thought I wanted to explore more. Thanks for the responses!

I think these things sneak up on you. I remember the first time I saw a peer tint her eyelashes. For context, she was super pale with almost white blonde hair and white eyelashes. It wasn't helped by the patch that was missed, but thought it was the dumbest fucking thing I'd ever seen. Someone with that colouring just isn't going to have black lashes. (I didn't say anything)

As more of my peers wore makeup and trends changed, it became normal to see everyone with black lashes, and the strangeness faded.

Now there's a revolutionary idea that... lashes don't have to be black. Who knew?

I don't think it impact my attraction to others but I do think it can impact other's attraction to me. I often think with the trend of hairstyle, beard, tattoos that's common among men now, it's easy to see why a majority of women would be more attracted to men who fit into those categories.

I didn't mean to compare only a Black man and a white man. More to say that I really don't have a "type".

Honestly, I don't find that many celebrity men attractive (or don't take much notice

) so I really don't know if the few I do find attractive are mainstream or not.

For the most part, no, not me. I don't think I have a type; physically speaking anyway.

My friends though, they certainly have types and I do think that's influenced by media and beauty standards. All have similar tastes in people too, and I've always felt different or (I joke) broken, because I just don't get it. 🤷‍♀️🤣

We are almost programmed to accept that beauty is primarily about aesthetics, but someone who is physically attractive can immediately lose their attractiveness the moment they open their mouths.

I find people who are genuine, considerate, intuitive and intelligent (and not just knowledgeable, but real intelligence and wisdom) really attractive.

Someone who has depth.

I think the person has to be beautiful, not just their body.

I misinterpreted the OP originally.

I think it's deliberately asking about the aesthetic side of beauty and whether media images influence what we think of as aesthetically pleasing/fanciable.

I've thought of a possibly non-mainstream celeb type, who I find aesthetically pleasing - Jeff Goldblum. But he's possibly in a similar aesthetic to Buddy Holly (who'd I'd definitely fancy if he were around today) and to some extent, my very own husband.....
