As said above, Vietnam is amazing.

Her itinerary is superb, fly in to Hanoi and out of hCM, overnight train between all the major sites. You’ll need 2 weeks to see everything. More if you want to loop inland and into the hills.

I’d not bother with trying any beaches in Vietnam. Compared to Thailand they’re shit.

Vietnam is still cheap cheap and the food is sensational. People are genuinely helpful and friendly. I saw 19 gap year kids and 70 odd years olds all saying it was the best country they’d ever visited. No better recommendation!

If you want to go to the beach have a few days in Thailand on the way home, but for sure prioritise spending more time in Vietnam. Thailand will be ok but you’ll have to make more of an effort to get away from the tourist hot spots. Consider a couple of internal flights if you want to maximise your time.

The sex in Vietnam is nothing like as in your face as Thailand. That said I didn’t indulge in either. Thailand still has the ping pong stuff which is sort of a cultural must do. You can see Bangkok in 2 days.

My plan would be minimum 2 weeks Vietnam. 2 days Bangkok. 4 days any beach resort in Thailand. If you have any extra time than that fly to siem reap and do the ankor temples.

Just saw you had 7 weeks..

So fly to Hanoi. 2-3 days there. Then arrange a ha long bay 2 night cruise. Add a night at cat ba island and back to Hanoi.

Overnight train to hue. 2 days

Bus to hoi an. 3 days and get a load of suits made whilst you’re there. I got a cream man from del monte thing bespoke for £100 some handmade crocodile shoes in blue and a couple of pairs of glasses.

If you want to do a side trip at this point get away from the coast and take a 4 day loop through the mountains to Dalat then back to the coast and another train trip to Ho Chi Minh.

3 days there will be fine. Plus a day trip to the tunnels. Then you’ll want a Mekong cruise into Cambodia. A day in or so to chill in Penom Penh then killings fields etc before bus to siem reap for 4 days around the Ankor area. Then fly to northern Thailand and mooch around for a week, big old bus ride down and then a ferry out to the islands for a week of chilling.

Arrange flight back home from koh samui if you can go direct or back via bangkok

Wherever I lay my hat

Was last there in 2023. Adore both countries and cannot wait to go back. As someone has already said, Cambodia is also incredible... As is Laos. You need months to do the region justice tho so choose your route carefully

We went to Thailand last year and we are going to Vietnam in September.

Thailand is incredible - Bangkok is the most amazing city with everything you want.

Khao Sok National park is inspiring.

Phuket is just party town

Grew up in Thailand as a kid - I think it is probably very different to what I remember as Pattaya was just a couple of shacks when I was there and Phuket didn’t even have the shacks.

Went to Vietnam last year as the kids wanted to do “Race Across The World” so we overlanded our way from Hanoi to Singapore.

Spent a lot of time in Thailand when I was younger , Chiang Mai, Rai, golden triangle , and last year I worked in Ubon Ratchani for a couple of months. I love Thailand, but detest places like Pattaya and all the sex trafficking. looking to spend a couple of months in Vietnam next winter , save on gas….

Been to Thailand three times. Loved it and the people.

Visited Vietnam once. I'd say it's around 40 years behind Thailand in terms of development. Nevertheless a great place to visit. Excellent hotels, food and beaches.

Milton Keynes and Central Pattaya

Currently on my 6th trip to Thailand. The previous 5 have all been to Phuket, which I have to say has got very expensive.

This time I am staying for 3 months, as I intend to see a lot more of the beautiful country. Then going to Vietnam to live a life long dream of sailing down the Meekong Delta.

Just don't put pressure on yourself to get so much done, enjoy everything that comes your way, and make memories to last a lifetime.

I've been to Thailand this year and Vietnam last year. Both are good, my favourite is definitely Thailand though. Vietnam is a lot cheaper if you need to budget.

You may struggle to find someone who has a reasonable command of English, understands what a tourist from the U.K. would like to see, and be willing and able to spend weeks touring the country with an unknown foreigner.

Perhaps you could buy guidebooks before you go, and use them to plan what you want to see and experience. If you spend your first few nights in a decent tourist hotel in Bangkok, the staff will direct you to local travel agents who will be able to get you started.

In Thailand, avoid the four southernmost regions which are subjected to Muslim terrorist attacks. Also avoid the Myanmar and Lao boarder areas where there are occasional gun battles between drug smugglers, the police and soldiers.

Be prepared for the heat and humidity! It ramps up about this time of year.
