where the road goes on forever

Should movies be re-made? Casablanca, gone with the wind, I guess there's some that could be improved, currently watching " stagecoach" with Willie nelson ,and Waylon Jennings, not as good as the John Wayne version

Somewhere In The Ether…

I’m generally, vehemently against remakes as I feel them to invariably be lazy cash grabs (Platinum Dunes catalogue for instance)

There are however some exceptions to the rule such as the recent Nosferatu (itself technically a second remake) which at the very least was a very high quality production.

I don’t like them, they’re almost always really poor. But the problem currently, is that it appears Hollywood has run out of original ideas.

Remakes are nothing new. Sometimes they’re good, sometimes they aren’t. People forget how many classics are remakes.

Wizard Of Oz

Scarface

Ben-Hur

The Departed

The Magnificent Seven

The Thing & The Fly - Two of my favourites, that are actually remakes.

I generally don’t like a remake as you become so accustomed to the original BUT I was watching highlander the other day and whist the script and the music are excellent… it is sooooooo dated and wonder what a remake would be like

(Just don’t change the music or the script)

I think you need to go and sit in a quiet room and think about what you just said then report back for detention later writing a thousand lines.

I will not come up with silly suggestions.

The Thing (1982) is possibly my favourite film, certainly the one I've watched the most. Mainly thanks to my teen years. The SFX were amazing at the time but clearly tired now. The prequel (2011) I thought was a pretty damn good film and really enjoyed it rather than a remake.

If they remade Back To The Future, Marty would be travelling back to the year…..1995 😂

...it's on the cards apparently! (but has been for years so let's see!!)

I'm all for reimagining an old film, either to reflect current world status, or an actor or director would like to put their spin on it, or simply because special effects could enhance a story, but the cash in style 'keep the franchise alive for the sake of it' type (Alien anyone?! Peaked at the second, now there's a hundred and six of them!). I have enjoyed a few of the more recent 'nostalgic' takes that have had a go; Top Gun and Axel F especially.

We have to accept the fact the clock ticks on and it is inevitable remakes will happen. Films you may hold dear from your youth may well be remakes of something older again and the generation before you cursing the fact their favourites have been desecrated (King Kong, Batman to name but two).

...I've read Die Hard may well be given the treatment too! Can you imagine... who in their right mind would dare jump on the back of such a classic for their own gain?! 🫣

I can just imagine a typically avaricious Hollywood executive’s vision for a remake of Jaws….

Starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Chief Brody, Ariana Grande as Quint, Will Ferrell as Hooper and of course, Bill Skarsgard as the shark 😩

In glorious 4D/5G/ultra-awesome high definition no less 😜

You can even smell the characters panic whenever the shark makes an appearance…

No, I think they should concentrate on coming up with forgotten styles of movies.

We need more Country & Western films

More musicals

More Sci Fi

And not just rehashed stories but originals.

If they remade Casablanca I’d rewatch excitedly.

They remade Gatsby and it’s one of my favourite films.

It depends on each case. Updated special effects in place of stop motion animation and so on, can look great.

There are loads of things I'd like to see adapted that have never been done, like Blackham's Wimpy.

Didn't know Waylon had acted, can't imagine anyone improving on the original Stagecoach. Apparently Welles watched it 30 times before making Citizen Kane !

Casablanca was remade as 'Havana' with Robert Redford - it stank.🤥

I was worried when it was being remade but knew the Cohen bros would do a good job and told it from a different angle

The same can't be said for the magnificent seven remake

Both Dune and Lord of the Rings were in my opinion good remakes.

Only concern is the Hollywood setup of dragging things out into too many movies/too long. I think they got it just about right with LOTR as it was three separate books, however stretching out The Hobbit which was a much shorter book aimed more at younger readers into 2-3 movies is too much.

It depends, if it was a good idea but poorly executed, or was a waste of good source material then I'm okay with it. In some instances it does feel like a cash grab.

To use 2 recent examples;

The Crow - it was always going to do badly at the box office. The original is much loved and no-one asked for a remake. At most they should have looked at another sequel rather than using Eric Draven again.

On the other hand is The Running Man - the book is excellent, and the 80s film has next to nothing to do with it. The remake that is in production at the moment is supposedly much closer to the original story, so I'm all for that as it will be totally different.

If there's a long enough time frame, they can work. The remake of 'cape fear' that scorsese did with robert de niro & nick nolte i think is a good example. I like the way the original actors robert mitchum & gregory peck were given minor cameo roles in it too.

What i think sucks big-time are the almost immediate remakes of foreign language films into english, as if people are incapable of reading subtitles.

- The american / hollywood remake of 'oldboy' is truly atrocious in comparison to the original korean film.

Remakes of classics, no thanks. Remakes of films that fucked the source material up first time around, yes please.

Remakes are a lesser evil to unwanted sequels...

Completely agree. Netflix's "the Guilty" is another example. Not a bad film (as one review on imdb puts it, "Jake Gyllenhaal could turn Peppa Pig into a drama!"), but the Danish original is the one to watch.

Tarantino was toying with the idea at one point of remaking, First Blood. Although the film is a classic, Tarantino's films are on another level. Hope it goes ahead.
