Over the rainbow, under the bridge

What is your favourite classic film - say 30+ years old? For me it has to be 'Some Like it Hot'.

Jack Lemmon was so funny in that - 'I'm a boy, I'm a boy. Oh boy, I'm a boy!'

So many classics!!! The Blues Brothers comes to mind immediately. Then there's Stir Crazy, The Shining, Mad Mad Mad Mad World, and The Great Escape...all just timeless films.

Still as visually stunning today as it was in 1982. A real cinematic treasure..

Oooohhh!!! That's a hard one, as there are so many of the classic movies that I like.

In general, my favourites have always been the old British comedies, a la all the 'Carry On' films, those starring Norman Wisdom, Peter Sellers, etc...

Generally for American films, anything starring any of the 'Rat Pack', 'The Godfather' series, anything with Steve McQueen in, etc...

But if I had to list my top 5 films (in no particular order) this would probably be it:

-----

Paint Your Wagon

The Magnificent Seven

Our Man Flint

St. Trinians

Carry On Screaming

-----

I could of created a much larger list... But I won't bore you with it!!!

This was a great question and I really enjoyed thinking, remembering and reminiscing about those beloved classics.

I'd challenge that with African Queen, just for the ridiculously minimal amount of kit Jack Cardiff had to shoot it with

I love that film but stand by what I said. Having said that, Olivier's version of Henry V shot in Ireland and films studios during WWII using US servicemen as extras is remarkable considering his limited budget. His studio sets could not be realistic so he based their perspectives on Bruegel paintings to give it a suitably mediaeval feel.

and not a mention of a British classic- Zulu.

Tension, action, sweeping vistas, some great acting (even from Michael Caine )....and his classic line "You're only supposed to blow the bloody spears off"

Also, two ends of the western spectrum- Blazing Saddles and High Noon
