This was a first for me when I went to my local aquatic store looking for a new algae eater. My friend came across this tank with 3 discus fish. One was practically on its side under a plant looking out of sorts!! She questioned a staff member and was told the other 2 are a pair and she was being submissive..... well that's a first!! am no fish expert but has anyone else heard of this type of behaviour in fish???

Yep, common really, although usually the 'sub' fish will stay out of the others way at the other end of the tank-not lay on its side!!

It's very common in Discus, but the 'submissive' one should really be taken out, especially if the other 2 are a breeding pair. They'll kill the odd one, although if it's laying on it's side, sounds like they've already had a go!!

Typical Cichlid behaviour, I prefer a more dominant fish, like the Oscar!!

Discus are beautiful fish, quite intelligent.... and good parents!!!

Very tranquil to gaze at in a nice tank!!

I regret buying these koi carp.

I wish I'd got more outgoing ones instead

Well the member of staff did say that the pair would not be in the tank long as it was rather small as well and she did look a really sad discus which seemed unfair.

Not so much in fish, but it is very common throughout the animal kingdom, so I don't see why not...

Beeston

It;s not submissive, just poorly.

It was probably suffering from belly hake.
