New snake in the UK

A new snake has been seen in the UK, which originally did live here around 300,000 years ago, before the last ice age. A couple of established groups are around Colwyn Bay and Regents Park, in London. They've been reported elsewhere too. Normally residential of mid and southern Europe, where they're in decline.

The Aesculapian snake grows to a couple of metres in length and eats small rodents and other small animals, by constriction. It's not venomous

Would you like them to stay, including spreading more widely?

If it's not venomous can't see why not. I used to have a corn snake that sat on my head until the cat killed it

Yes. I have an instinctive fear of snakes but I wish them no harm

In some towns in Turkey, Alanya in mind, the town has lots and I mean lots roaming the streets, they help keep the snakes away.

Back to your question, if it is an non indigenous species it should go. In the same way as the wild pigs in the Cairngorms of Scotland were dealt with.

I think even snakes would avoid a hedgehog as a snack

Not really? Are you forgetting how Boris and Rishi fucked us all up and stepped into the Premier role?

Perfect! Leave it! Doesn’t seem to be that invasive if it’s in Europe. How it got back in to the UK is another question.

However, ecosystems are delicate things so it should be monitored.

Badgers couldn’t eat a live hedgehog if it tried?! Badgers mainly eat invertebrates.

"They'd have a feast up here with all the rats at the moment so send them here"

I think rodent numbers have been escalating

It's a bit exciting, having a new snake but I'd be concerned about its impact on our wildlife.

They do enter homes, to stay warm, from time to time. I'd be jumpy if I caught sight of a 5 or 6 feet snake, coming across my bed, or armchair

The woodland trust says

' Badgers are the main natural predator of hedgehogs in the UK. Because badgers have thick skin and long claws, they are one of the few species that can kill and eat otherwise fairly well protected hedgehogs.'

I love them both. Sadly saw a hedgehog on the road last week . Alive and let it scuttle off but seems way too early to end hibernation!

I bet cars kill more hedgehogs than badgers do.

It's such a tragedy, each time I see one killed by vehicles. I'm guessing that it's probably tens of times higher, the numbers killed by our vehicles, compared with predators.

I've just read that it's estimated to be between 100,000 and 335,000 a year

"Did they eat Tom?"

I don't think he was a fan but this species typically eats small mammals and I think Tom was rather more giant.

I can't emulate his news richness. And I really miss his geographic input too . Such a huge loss for us.

Bedfuck

A couple of meters that's around 6ft that's pretty big. If it is a constrictor we might be in trouble, it could take a child.

Snakes are symbols of good n bad health, the 13 sign of the zodiac Osphecus is depicted wrestling one. I think this month is the sign of Osphecus, spellin?

"Where did these evil buggers come from?"

Despite being near London zoo, it states the colony in Regents Park didn't originate from them.

A lot of people have got fed up with pets and dumped them, as we saw from the pandemic :

Considering it's a constrictor I'd say hedgehogs are relatively safe. If anything it help with rat populations in those areas.
