Somewhere In The Ether…

Most classic musicals.

There’s some undeniably iconic numbers in them but they were generally ‘padded’ out (to fill the required running time) interminably.

The exception would be West Side Story though which I felt was superb throughout (well apart from that ‘Be cool’ number which has aged rather badly)

Birdman starring Michael Keaton.

Now, I love Keaton normally and this particular film came with a whole slew of five star reviews so I sat my arse down to watch it with high hopes.

Alas! Sweet Jesus! ‘Twas a pile of self congratulatory, pretentious drivel, the regretful likes I have seldom seen before or since (nor bloody well wish to!) 😵‍💫

American Hustle: Whilst I did admittedly quite like the ending and I thought that Christian Bale was great in it, I personally found all other aspects of this ‘modern classic’ to be rather….well, frankly shit.

Encouraging actors to ad lib their lines throughout an entire film seldom produces good results and even the usually dependable Bradley Cooper’s overacting was especially off putting in my opinion.

It’s doubly a shame as the same director along with Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence previously gave us the superb, Silver Linings Playbook which I loved.

As a Trekkie speaking Star Wars didn't do it for me, too much hype at the time, Clapperboard did a whole episode on it..

Great special effects but story just drags on n on. Didn't see it original release because of the hype.

Borrowed the vhs 3 tape box set 35 years later off a friend. Didn't enjoy it.

Chinatown (1974) - love Polanski, love Jack Nicholson, love Faye Dunaway but how and why this one gets held in high reverence just baffles me. Its a mediocre 20's film noir thriller at best. It also allegedly has one of the greatest twists in cinematic history... one that I actually missed upon 1st viewing.

My other choices - Batman, Dirty Dancing, Grease, Interview With The Vampire & Shawshank Redemption already been chosen I think.

Bale and Amy Adams are so good in Hustle but Cooper and Lawrence stink it up with their overacting! Still worth watching for Amy Adams dress though.

I love how divisive and subjective movie opinions and tastes are! There are a few listed above (I am very much in the 'musicals are shit' camp) that I would agree do not meet expectations their hype or status give them. But equally there are a few up there that I will argue as 'classics' till the cows come home!!

For me, despite its standing, I have to give it to 'Laurence of Arabia'. Just bored the whole way through.

...also, glad to see Die Hard is not mentioned once! 😉

Forest Gump- its sort of OK, just not the 'Wow!' many seem to have watching it. Hanks has done much better stuff.

Anything Marvel/DC, seen one, seen em all- same with things like Fast & Furious

LOTR. Went to the cinema for the first one, fell asleep after an hour of not much happening- didn't bother with the others from then on.

Grease. Hard to take a bunch of middle aged people playing 17 year olds seriously- fairly shoddy all round. Best thing about it was the cars.

Somewhere In The Ether…

I see that Francis Ford Coppola’s, Apocalypse Now was mentioned earlier….

I concur wholeheartedly with the sentiment!

I found it to be a grotesquely overblown, overly self indulgent and generally, very boring film.

If I’m being honest, I find all of Coppola’s films to generally fit this description although I did admittedly enjoy his version of Dracula (despite the usually superb Anthony Hopkins rather hammy portrayal of Abraham Van Helsing)

"I find all of Coppola’s films to generally fit this description although I did admittedly enjoy his version of Dracula (despite the usually superb Anthony Hopkins rather hammy portrayal of Abraham Van Helsing)

"

Completely agree... I enjoyed Dracula, but it certainly wasn't the sum of its parts; so much bad about it!! I think it was just carried solely on the shoulders of Gary Oldman!

"The exorcist.

Fully agree. Its a slowburn snoozefest and even a cameo by Rude Kid out of Viz fails to liven it up.

"The Godfather. It was just a slow, gangster wank-fest

Oh Joe, how could you

Commonly regarded on virtually every list as the greatest gangster movie of all time.

Goodfellas is better "

Good fellas is always no 2. Read the book the movie was based on, and it's even better.

"This is controversial but I wasn’t exactly enthralled by The Shawshank Redemption.

It was certainly well made and the performances were great but I just felt….well…meh 🙁

I think you might start a fight with that one

I’ll start digging myself a tunnel to safety now…. 😜

Don’t anyone dare say the great escape!

😱😂😂😂"

Not even Tom Dick or Harry

Coppola's a good early example of what I mentioned earlier- Directors who are also Producers and have no-one to reign in their excesses. Apart from Godfather 1 his best film IMO is The Conversation, a brilliant tight film with Gene Hackman.

Tarantino's another one - apart from Reservoir Dogs all his films could easily lose 30 minutes and be better for it !

Absolutely; Excessive running times are a major bone of contention for me as regards so many modern films.

Take the recent, Wicked for instance; Just short of three (interminable!) hours(!!!) - and in this bloated running time, it only managed to tell half the actual story (I can visualise the Hollywood executives greedily rubbing their hands whilst waiting to reap in a ton more dosh from part 2)

Sometimes, as the colloquialism goes, ‘less is more.’

Taxi Driver. Just as it starts to get good, it ends. Very strange.

I'm not sure if it's qualifies as a 'great' film but Wonka was absolute shite. Also, shoot me down but I didn't get into any of the Star Wars films.

😂 No, I actually like it although the Ballerina one coming out is questionable.
