Erm.

Not sure what's older. I think it'll mainly be superceded when I acquired the (repaired) Grandfather clock, though one of the instruments might be older. I don't know exact dates.

I think I must qualify as a hoarder then coz I have loads of old stuff. Mainly family stuff. My ggrandmas wedding ring 1913, my ggrandads queen Mary box from WW1. Letters from war time. Original birth and baptismal certs, family bible. A parcel that was on a boat which was torpedoed during WWII, retrieved and sent on. A pair of 50 year anniversary plaques from Lourdes which were supposedly the only things left, standing on a fireplace in a village in France WWI. It’s all sentimental stuff, kept in a big box. Black Marble Orthocera Bowl.

Approx 450 million years old.

Technically though, it's not the oldest thing in the house. That would be me. Because my atoms existed at the birth of the universe. Just like everyone elses.

"I think I must qualify as a hoarder then coz I have loads of old stuff. I regularly look through it though, it’s not left hidden away "

Try and track down your Great Grandads medals, they will be out there somewhere.British Medal Forum (free to use) and Medals Re-United groups (on Facebook) are a good start

My holiday home in Scotland which has come down through the family for five generations, and was originally paid for by my great, great grandfather. It has loads of antiques in it. However the item that always arouses my curiosity is a 175 year old legal document for the purchase of three adjacent plots for him or his issue (descendents). I've located them in the village church yard, but whether my ownership of the ground would stand up in law now could be an interesting legal point to argue.

My flat looks a bit like a vintage junk shop as I love old tat from yesteryear. I used to collect old crank handled sewing machines but got rid of most a couple of years ago. Got a couple of Singers and Jones one left. Love the iron work and the painted Egyptian style artwork on them.

4 bore is a Wildfowling calibre, for Geese etc, usually fired on a rest (monopod etc).Much bigger than a 12 bore.By comparison,by the time of Waterloo,British muskets had reduced down in size from 12 bore to 16 bore.16 equal sized balls from 1 pound of lead,16 1 ounce balls.4 bore = 4 four ounce balls.A 16 bore ball is capable of taking off a human arm.

You're welcome.Should have mentioned, solid ball is today illegal in a Shotgun,so typically the weight is distributed amongst smaller balls (shot),therefore your 4 bore will fire 4 ounces of shot, which can be of various sizes as long as each total doesn't exceed 4 ounce. This type of weapon was also used by the old boy big game hunters in Africa and India, from big cats to Elephants. If its a muzzle loader you are fine in relation to licensing (exempt) if not you are still ok,obsolete calibre (its not a common "off the shelf" calibre),you can have them made at which point you require a license.
