Do you ever get a 'spidey sense' ...a feeling that something is off / wrong?

It's sometimes referred to as a 'sixth sense' or a 'gut feeling'

... Has it ever been wrong?? How did it play out?

(PS, it's just a thread topic, all is good in my world)

I have learnt to trust my judgment - if my gut tells me something is not quite right then there is a higher than normal probability something will go wrong.

Yeah it's a gut feeling, though I sometimes give things the benefit of the doubt incase I'm overthinking things, it's never been wrong yet.

Yes, and I've been wrong about the reason behind why something felt off as often as I've been right.

It's easy to layer incorrect assumptions onto that feeling of uneasiness.

All the time and I need to learn to trust it more often.

The most significant one was in an old job, there was this woman I worked with who everyone adored, but I just didn't like her, I don't know what it was, but I felt like something was really off about her behaviour and attitude. She picked up on this and would try and do little things to inconvenience/bother me. I told my colleagues that I wasn't fond of her and couldn't place it, fast forward a few months and it turns out she was extremely toxic, a thief and tried to turn everyone against eachother.

What people call instinct or gut feeling is very often just confirmation bias. I pay attention but remain open to other feelings and the frequent chance I'm wrong.

Sometimes I think we try to make the narrative fit... Maybe it's a mask for our choice's that are difficult to own

I think it's our brain quickly computing info we have about someone and checking it against previous personal experience. If things seem off, the 'gut feeling ' is some kind of anxiety as a result of what our head is telling us

Definitely the brain doing hyper speed calculations but that can only be based on the info it holds. If a certain smell or sound reminds my brain of a previous bad experience then its going to send out sub conscious warnings, but the current scenario may be completely different from that past experience.

As someone who is definitely in the "glass is half empty" camp I always see threat and negativity all the time.

Some I'm constantly in fight or flight mode.

So yes my Spidey sense is always tingling.

Yes absolutely.

Ignored it too many times and realised maybe too late...

I let myself be persuaded that my gut was wrong, over and over. I guess I didn't have that trust in myself but now I know that I absolutely can trust myself and I was 100% right all along. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but more importantly I've learnt a valuable lesson about myself and how other people can influence me if I chose to let them.

Had an experience as a child which made me trust my instincts. A friend and I were walking on a path under a huge cedar tree near my house one night. The hairs on my neck stood up like a startled cat and I shouted “RUN”. We ran. A second later a bough made a mighty crack and fell in to the path behind us. We would have been right underneath it. It was very scary for us both but I’ve never ignored my instincts since. Spidey sense is very real, I suspect many just learn not to listen. Teach your kids to listen and trust themselves.

It would be interesting to see research on the decision making outcomes of those who rely on instinct/gut feeling and those who lean on more a more considered and rational process. My guess is the latter group would make consistently better life decisions, but that's just a gut feeling.

Yes absolutely, I’ve had ‘spidey senses’ over quite a lot to be honest, I’d say it’s right most of the time. I previously would brush it off however now I listen to my gut instinct no matter what.

However that instinct also goes both ways, those moments you just know things are a positive and you’re making the right decision.

I do from time to time; I do listen to my gut but I also tend to ignore it; several trips to A&E are testimony to that.

Also, I heard the guy being a persons second brain.

Studies have shown that judges are more likely to grant parole after dinner than before. An explanation for this is that the mild feeling of discomfort created by a brain in response to the threat of low blood glucose gets interpreted as a negative feeling about someone.

Given the above, I'm inclined to distrust gut feelings. I'm certainly inclined to distrust my wife's gut feelings. As a self confessed sufferer of getting hangry, we are both well aware that her views about any given situation can be heavily influenced by how long ago she ate. I suspect the effect, while less obvious in me, is equally strong.

Our feelings are influenced by so many things, chemical compounds like alcohol and caffeine are well known but there are many more. Then there are our hormones and a whole host of internal controls like blood sugar. All of these affect us mentally in an ever changing complex pattern. I think believing that any of this mess creates something approximating a "sense" is highly unlikely given the evidence to the contrary.

These threads do pop up a great deal though and will always have a long list of 20/20 hindsight where people will claim to have known things all along but remain unable to explain why, knowing what they did, they allowed themselves to be fooled.

Me? I'm as thick as a plank so prefer evidence as my feelings are not too be trusted.

You may have touched on something really interesting here. We may be looking at intellectual quotient vs emotional quotient. They are not exclusive. I’m very much logical and rational but still have great faith in my instincts. I score slightly higher in IQ than EQ.

It’s worth mentioning that experiments repeated over and over show that some of us know when someone is looking at us from behind and even at a distance.

There must be a wide range of instincts which we evolved over a long period to recognise possible dangers. I'm not sure how many of those are applicable in a modern environment of so much random information and stimuli.🤷‍♂️

What we like to call intuition is more likely our subconscious brain picking up clues and evidence we have not consciously processed.

When you do martial arts/meditation/Qigong alot you start to develop that spidey sense feeling...

Sometimes I get a funny feeling someone is there walking behind me when I'm walking out & about & when I turn round they are. It's a spooky feeling!!!

Perhaps it's something from hunter gatherer days?

I remember doing a meditation once, eyes closed. My teacher told me to imagine I was standing on grass. I got so into it I felt the cold, cool grass on a warm day in a breeze. I've held a circle pose with my arms like you are holding a cauldron. That was spooky - I felt like I was holding a solid object. Like hugging a chunky tree.
