There are some fantastic singers/ songs from most decades that stick in your mind. My favourite Decade has to be the 70s with Slade. But now I tend to listen to singers who can actually sing , are vocal athletes, no auto tune , just pure vocal magic. One recent one has to be Sidney Christmas.

I’m torn on this question. The 60s was a groundbreaking decade for music with too many outstanding songs and artists to mention.

The 90s was my decade for music and it was brilliant. So many bands were influenced by the music from the 60s & 70s.

Arrghhh 🫣🤯

For sheer variety of new music, it has to be the 70s. Not saying I like it all, but any decade with disco, soul, metal, punk, new wave, prog rock, Led Zeppelin, Queen, ABBA, Elton John, and of course, Jilted John...

Now because of modern technology you can listen to every song you have ever heard just by tapping the title into your phone. Much better then spending £20 (in 90s money) and waiting six weeks for some obscure vinyl to arrive from America.

The 80s was when a huge change in music occurred- synthesisers, drum machines, digital recording and effects, the visuals of music videos - MTV came along! There was an explosion in the diversity of music genres, iconic artists and aesthetics. It was all new, exciting and not like anything that had come before. Synth, rap… Independent labels sprang up rough trade, creation and Indie music was something to be proud of. Then music journalism - NME, Sounds, Melody Maker, Smash Hits, Kerrang, The Wire and Q.

Then there was music on television - The Tube, Top of the Pops, Going Live, No. 73, The Late Shift, The Oxford Road Show, Sounds of Surprise, More Bad News, Whistle Test, The Chart Show, Wired… Then there was the music tribes that came along - punk came back but with better music but you could be a New Romantic, Goth, Soulboy, Raver, Casual; you had Psychobillies, Brosettes, Durannies, metal kids…

Don't forget the three music formats Tape, CD and vinyl all having their respective camps. AM radio gave way to FM and satellite. Portability of became cheaper: from Walkman to the ghettoblaster music of your choice went out and about with you. Techmoan from You tube, knows about this era.

The cassette, was the only way of making your own recordings and sending it to the record labels, both big or small at an affordable cost.

This was the era where analogue and digital were staring each other out: face to face like a pair of pre-fight boxers. It will be a long time before we see another decade like that.

Reading

Without a doubt the best music of various varieties was the 80s, from synth pop, rock, mj's thriller album,

To the actual creation of rap, yes created in the 80s, dance music, hip hop, house, all created in the 80s.

My top 5 of 80s

1) Thriller Album

2) Rick Astley stick Aitken sounds of the 80s

3) Wham - last Christmas - what gets the ladies on the dancefloor

4) Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes I had the time of my life - the song to make the ladies melt.

5) Whitney Houston - I wanna dance with somebody.

I love music in all the decades but the 80s was just incredible in terms of the creativity and variety not to mention the types of music created. Can any other decade beat that?

Poor Madonna couldn't even make the top 5 of the 80s

"I'd have to say 70s, I grew up listening to my parents' music. But then obviously 90s bring back memories of my childhood. One things for sure, music is not what it used to be 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️"

Some of the biggest 80s music actually came from the seventies 'Cars' by Gary Numan is one example.

"The 80s was when a huge change in music occurred- synthesisers, drum machines, digital recording and effects, the visuals of music videos - MTV came along!

It will be a long time before we see another decade like that."

"Plenty of good music the last 10 years. Same thev10 years before. Think people who are into music properly will have a different answer to those who just listen to music. "

I agree, we’re music fans, of course it’s lovely to have a trip down memory lane and listen to music that reminds you of happy times etc, I think that’s what prompts people to favour music from their teens, we love it all!

Stuck between the 80's and the 90's....

Since then it's just been rap or just remix after remix of old tunes.

There are no real artists nowadays.

There are probably only 2 that I would say will be remembered in future years.

Depends on your definition of '80's music'

They had an 80's themed work do- asked if they'd be playing Siouxsie, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, The Cult, Carter USM, Grandmaster Flash or PWEI....i got a confused look in response so didn't bother going

"I would say the 60’s or the 90’s …. But I could argue that 1971 could be the single greatest year in music history

Why 1971 specifically? I'm interested now.

Honestly.. if you have Spotify or Apple Music and just put in 1971… you will see…

1 single year. 1979. Quality tunes then.

We should play music year poker.. pick your year, your best 5 songs from that year…. And let people decide who has the best hand!

1971 will win!!! Trust me!!

Deal. Excuse the pun. If it's any consolation (to the both of us) I went into Spotify and hit top 100 hits (from both years). First tracks that appeared on mine...

1971. Chirpy chirpy cheep cheep.

1979. Bright Eyes.

My 5...

Heart of Glass - Blondie

Another Brink in the Wall - Pink Floyd

Video Killed the Radio Star - Buggles

The Eaton Rifles - The Jam

Since you've been gone - Rainbow

I've chosen with a spread in mind to win you over with a big of 'something for everyone'. There are loads of good Abba songs in that year and Ska as notable omissions. You won't win me over with 1971 lol.

Also Sugarhill Gang, Rappers Delight in 79.

Hotel, Motel, Holiday Inn !

Okay… my 5 songs from different genres covering 1971

What’s going on - Marvin gaye

Get it on - T Rex

Proud Mary - ike and Tina turner

Gypsys, tramps and thieves- Cher

Imagine- John Lennon

Who wins?

Agree with Leo, Fab. Big drop off and when you look at my reserves (including Rappers Delight Leo) they keep piling in. I mean I left the Specials out for God's sake.

79 takes it. "

You only need to mention one track and one band for 1971 to be the hands down winner over ‘79. SLADE Coz I Luv U no contest, but I could back it up with The Doors and Riders On The Storm.

"All of them.

Good music didn't stop coming out at some date "

Yup, this.

No one decade was better than another, we're invariably going to chose the decade that mirrors our formative years (90's for me), but every decade is full of classic unforgettable tunes, and every decade has it's own share of dross!

If you want to get statistical on it, according to Rolling Stones Magazines Top 500 Songs EVER, it's split;

1940s - 1 - 0.2%

1950s - 72 - 14%

1960s - 203 - 41%

1970s - 142 - 28%

1980s - 57 - 11%

1990s - 22 - 4.4%

2000s - 3 - 0.6%

Growing up in south Manchester. Many friends were involved with music. Many famous musicians and bands were from the area. So 60’s Nico used to ride past on her dutch bike, phil Lynott lived a few avenues away most of the dreamers lived close. The 70’s we had 10cc and Sad Cafe. 80’s were a blur until the late part. 90’s Simply red, Mondays, Roses. Noel and Liam. Some good dance and house music then…

Well I've just enjoyed editions of Top of the Pops from February 1981 & 1987 on BBC4, though should point out the 1981 edition included 'The Oldest Swinger In Town' and 'Shaddap You Face'.

The music I enjoyed as kid as youngster/teen 'died' towards the end of 1987/early 1988 with the arrival of 'house' and 'dance'. All of a sudden everything was 'Beat Dis' or 'Bomb Dat'.....bloody awful. And as all that shifted music one way, Stock Aitken & Waterman filled the gap with their "slightly different song with a slightly different tune sung by a slightly different face" drivel (with the odd exception, 'Never Gonna Give You Up' for instance will remain one of the classics of the era).

So for me, my "golden era" would be 1974 through to 1987 or thereabouts.

I used to hang out with New Romantics - went to a local basement club one night after coming back from football and the bouncers wouldn’t let us in - “do you know what they look like down there”! I also remember Marilyn walking across our fire station yard one evening while we were playing volleyball - the ultimate ‘could have heard a pin drop’
