So this week I read a "spicy" book that had been recommended to me several times by other swinger women and I'd seen on lots of booktok videos etc being recommended. It's from the dark romance genre of spicy. I had a lot of high expectations...

And it was crap 😂 the writing is absolutely terrible and some of the dialogue especially during sex scenes made me cringe (the female protagonist saying their pussy was "weeping" makes me think they need a drip to the doctor, not a fuck).

So I guess my question is, when looking for a spicy book to enjoy do you overlook bad writing if the storyline is hot? How important is the story/characterisation to you or do you just care about how hot the sex scenes are?

For me, it needs to be both. I can't ignore bad writing for the sake of smut.

Also, any genuinely good spicy book recs are definitely welcome! Dark romance/fantasy in particular.

I find it incredibly difficult to find a decent spicy read as most are so badly written.

On here awhile ago I came across a story called Mr Nolan. It was so well written, not at all smutty but drew you in.

I loved the ladies style of story telling.

Sadly she’s no longer on here but she definitely could have made a fantastic naughty author.

No, would die of secondhand embarrassment at bad writing or bad dialogue. I have higher standards for my erotica 😂

Yeah I'll be honest most booktok recommendations put me off but lots of women I actually know through swinging also rated this one so I thought I'd give it a try. I should have known better 😂

Years ago I picked up a copy of John Cleland's novel Fanny Hill (subtitled, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure). It was in one of those posh 'World's Classic' editions, with a scholarly introduction and lots of references. The blurb on the back said that when it had been released in about 1750, it had been regarded as pornography. I thought nothing of that; different times, different morals.

A delightful story, incredibly engaging and well written - and entirely pornographic. Unusual for having a lead character who was strong and wilful and entirely designed to be the hero of the piece but was also female and highly sexed. Clive James said somewhere that it was wrong to think of it as a book that told you about what a woman who liked sex thought of sex, but that it was at least a book that told you about what a man who genuinely admired women imagined they might think. (You probably need to be Clive James to make that sentence shorter, and I'm not.)

From memory it took great pleasure in never repeating a euphemism.

I've read some badly written books in general if the plot and world building are good enough to overlook it, but as a general rule I need good writing.

I read a lot.of amateur stuff and honestly, some of it is better than published books these days. I've read a few with high ratings and like you said, they are terribly written or massively overhyped.

I read this book when I was 14 … it transformed my wanking

it is absolutely a great read still today

For me spicy sex well written is very difficult to find, I prefer novellas which are in effect short stories,

By far one of the most accomplished authors is on fab !

Check out Miss Jones written by Floss frankly exceptional !

It’s the ability to be turned on get hard with out the dialogue of cringe

I also think it’s wonderful to read aloud to your fab friends ( avoid a monotone voice lol ) it’s it’s a winner !

It takes a huge amount for me to not finish a book, no matter how poorly written.

If I'm reading smut as wank-fodder I have higher standards than just reading smut as fiction. Poorly written smut will take me out of the moment completely and distract me from an orgasm.

Smut as fiction might make me smile but I'll carry on reading anyway.
