"Years ago I picked up a copy of John Cleland's novel Fanny Hill (subtitled, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure). It was in one of those posh 'World's Classic' editions, with a scholarly introduction and lots of references. The blurb on the back said that when it had been released in about 1750, it had been regarded as pornography. I thought nothing of that; different times, different morals. A delightful story, incredibly engaging and well written - and entirely pornographic. Unusual for having a lead character who was strong and wilful and entirely designed to be the hero of the piece but was also female and highly sexed. Clive James said somewhere that it was wrong to think of it as a book that told you about what a woman who liked sex thought of sex, but that it was at least a book that told you about what a man who genuinely admired women imagined they might think. (You probably need to be Clive James to make that sentence shorter, and I'm not.) From memory it took great pleasure in never repeating a euphemism."
