everyday phrases

This might be my favourite topic. Have you ever heard a phrase and wondered where it came from? If so, post it and I'm sure the world of fab will answer it.

For example:

3 square meals

Ans: came from maritime and was part of the pay. The meals were eaten on 'square' plates to stop them rolling around when at sea.

One for the road means having one last drink before heading home. Not sure on origin

On the wagon is something to do with prisoners having a last drink then being transported by a wagon to the gallows

well done. they both come from the same time. when sentenced to the gallows prisoners were transported by horse and cart. they had to pass through an area with lots of public houses. many of the condemned man's friends met him there to give him a last drink - 'one for the road'

quite often the horseman got drink aswell and on some occassions got so d*unk neither he nor the prisoner made the gallows. the reigning monarch decreed when anyone was driving the prisoners they were not allowed to drink. hence their reply when offered a drink - 'no im on the wagon'

Maritime again, a "brass monkey" is the plate on which cannonballs were kept. When the temperature was very cold the brass plate (monkey) contracted and the balls rolled off......

i think egg sucking was a fashion thing. eggs would have been painted and provide decoration. the contents were sucked out to stop them going rotten i suppose

It's why scouts shake with left hand..... Traditionally to show friendship by making themselves vulnerable,- left hands used to hold the shield, so put their defences down to greet other, trusting the other wouldn't spear them!

Been to some of their functions. They are a nice bunch of people, well teh ones I met were nice. Found their handshakes and stuff a bit odd though.

No, I didnt think you were or would be. I was at a afew dinners dos and really enjoyed the company of civilised intelligent people. Just did not quite get some of the stuff that is apparently mean to be secret. But then, we are not meant to, are we?
