NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

Hey all, hope you’re having a lovely day!

I’m asking the above on here in the hopes that I can maybe get some pointers. I’ve been working in finance for nearly 10 years. Love the job but getting a bit restless.

I’ve been wanting to branch out in to a career that offers new challenges and more reward (loadsa money).

One career I’ve identified is Software Engineering or Cyber security. I feel like I’ve got transferable skills but when I’m googling for roadmaps my brains frazzled from an overload of information.

For any software engineers or cyber security analysts how did you start and where did you begin?

Many thanks x

About 3 feet away from the fence

Software Engineering is a very broad umbrella that could encompass dozens of different disciplines within it across a large number of industries.

From what I understand about software development jobs, most of those these days are requiring a CompSci degree (or Software Engineering degree) at a bare minimum. I'd imagine that to also be the case for Cyber Security.

I've done similar OP. Worked in finance branch base and private banking finishing on debt collection then switched over to environmental enforcement. I leave a role today and considered the data analyst route for starters with the potential to branch out once in the tech field. In my search though there seems to be more demand and prospects for Agile managers and Scrum Masters. I imagine all transferable skills from where you're coming from. I'm considering a 2year stop gap while I consider my next move and off to ride motorbikes.
