Bad spelling I can cope with and even text speak to a degree.

Where I struggle is with statements that don't form a coherent sentence, where the more you look at it, the more confusing it becomes.

I am not about to knock anyone for it though. As an adult, I have to accept that not everyone is as literate as they perhaps might like to be.

That should not exclude them from posting though - but in many cases, posts such as this will scare potential posters away for fear of derision.

Im slightly dyslexic and also have fat fingers so i know my posts on here can be littered with mistakes. On the forums, spelling and grammar unless shockingly bad don't overly bother me. But with our profile and our messages much more care is taken. And it does put us off profiles very quickly if they are badly written, it shows a lack of effort which is just not appealing.

Just to be clear I am not making any criticism of anyone's use of the english language. I was making an observation and wondered if anyone else noted same.

I used to get beaten at home and school for poor grammar!

English is an ever evolving language and will adapt to its environment. There is a belief that text speak will be accepted as the written word in around 50 years.

I didn't know that, wow that's my new knowledge of today. The language does evolve as does meanings of words. My mum struggles in writing and spelling due to dyslexia, and yet would rather try to spell the word than shorten it. Its how I was taught.

I (mr) am terrible at spelling and glad my phone has auto correct on it otherwise no one would know what I am saying. I do try but even the simplist of words can knock me. im not dyslexic that i know of just a bit thick when it comes to spelling. If sending messages mrs always checks them before the sent button is pressed and she looks after the profile as she is really picky over it.

Hello all,

the point was made that language evolves, but it makes little sense that it does. We have a perfectly good and functioning language with it's rules and spelling. Yes we get new words as, technology for instance, requires that. But the trend to make new 'verbs' out of nouns is silly as there are sufficient words already.

We also seem to use more American expressions which, in most cases, are poor English, e.g. right now. As now is immediate, the right is superfluous.

I think it's better to stick to standard English rather than inventing a newer version which simply causes confusion and misunderstanding.

Alec

I do find it a little sad the standard of spelling and grammar. Sadly, spell check does not normally tell you that you have used the wrong word.

There is a common thread in posts I have noticed. Those that do not know the difference between "there" and "their".

Then you have "your" and "You're" mixed up.

The words sound the same but have totally different meanings.

Spelling Nazi.

The thing is I try and still don't know which one of the words to use. People still understand what I've wrote so does it really matter. To me it doesn't. Probably about 25% of the words I say I couldn't spell them even if my life depended on it but I can hold a good conversation. So what is more important would you say? Someone that can spell the words but couldn't hold a conversation or someone that can spell and would send a glass eye to sleep

No the object of the sentence is that garammer is bad, grammar are not bad. Common enough mistake, you don't pluralise the word 'is' just because there is more than one descriptor.

You're correct. You do what you need to do. If you are a verbal communicator at work then speaking is more important than spelling. If your life revolves around the written word then spelling and grammar become important.

Again I'm not judging - it's an observation of the change in the use of the English language. As a population our spelling and grammar will get worse because technology is taking over.

When you were a kid how often did you say 'how do you spell ......'. I can't remember when one of my kids asked me to spell something.

Ps. Grammatically correct geeks can be sexy too!

The odd spelling mistakes and the use of the wrong word is ok and I think most of us probably dont even pick up on it.

However text typing I hate! It reminds me of when my niece is texting me and it takes me 10 minutes to read it!

By they way has anyone else typed out their post and then gone back and checked your spellings before hitting the post button?

The topic is so divisive because language and what is consider "good" use of language are linked to other things including social status - they should not be but they are.

On here spelling and grammar (or lack of) do not bother me as it is about the essential message and as long as I can make sense of it without too much trouble it is fine with me.

If somebody applies for a job I have to apply differnet criteria depending on the nature of the job. If somebody writes to me via email or even text I prefer proper English but would not end a friendship over bad spelling. That said, I guess I probably surround myself with similar people socially - not deliberate but it just happens and as such my friends are all pretty good spellers.
