I think the US one has always been "celeb". First season some of the players knew each other from other shows as well. Don't know if that continued or not.

I tried to get in to the US version but got bored about a quarter of the way in. Everyone just felt too fake.

Alan Cumming is the only good thing about the US version. Most of them are from other reality shows (the second series also has bloody John Bercow in) and it's definitely not as good as the UK version.
