My best memories are of killer instinct. I was the king of that in my arcade! I would play winner stays on all day long with just my initial buy in credit. I had all of the highest scores.

I eventually bought and restored one to play in my garage but sadly sold it after my divorce.

Other favourites were Super Street Fighter 2, Mortal Kombat II, Sega Rally and Time Crisis.

I was (and still am!) a huge fan of Capcom’s, classic Beat ‘em ups; King Of Dragons, Final Fight, Knights Of The Realm, Cadillacs And Dinosaurs etc.

The soundtracks were also always bloody brilliant! 😃😃

God where do I start…. My career started off on track and field, and hyper sports… drifted into wrestle war, tried the shoot em up like operation wolf but wasn’t really my jam

Tried street fighter… tried enduroracer (quite good at that) tried after burner ( not very good at that)

Other than that… it was all racing games for me… pole position.. then super Monaco Grand Prix… then Daytona, but in the east end I was known as the “king of outrun”

Greatest ever arcade moment was at the huge arcade in the trocadero in Leicester Square… after being “retired” for 5 years I see an outrun machine.. but not any old machine. Fully kitted out machine with a full sized 2 door Ferrari testarosa … and a huge crowd watching anyone watching making a poor show

Now my version of what happened next is that I didn’t want to ruin my legacy, but my mates egged me on to do it “one last time” truth is I couldn’t get in quick enough

The next bit is a blur

Now the cocky bit of me next apparently shouted if any girl wanted to jump in the front seat.. and one did… bloke explained gears brakes accelerator…

Chose my music… musical sound shower

Next 8 minutes were a thing of beauty … that many people watching!

Completed it…. Bloke operating the machine said I was the first person to complete it that day.. and 2nd fastest time ever (1 second outside quickest ever)

Mates said I should go for the record… I just said to myself friends I am “retired”

Got the cute girls number… went to Hagen daas in Leicester Square to have an ice cream celebration!!!

Cadillacs and Dinosaurs! That one was brill. I had a little arcade collection on my phone for a while. I remember it had that and King of Fighters 98 on it. Can't remember the rest.

Loving in a seaside town most of my youth was spent hanging out in the arcades. Used to love Spy Hunter and Gauntlet then the game changed with sit down versions of Outrun and Afterburner. They were just next level. Seem to remember spending an awful amount of money when Operstion Wolf and Dragon's Lair came out too.

What about the ridiculously hard dungeons and dragons game, they had one at the Airport Bowl, next to the Ariel Hotel on the perimeter road Heathrow.

From memory it was mega expensive compared to other games and cost 50p a go, generally speaking games lasted about 15 seconds and was impossible to play.

Talking of which, do you remember the ludicrously hard, Ghosts and Goblins?

Legend has it that after forking out all of one’s hard earned coins in order to reach the end (not as though I got anywhere near said goal) a message comes up saying that it was all an illusion and you’re sent back to the start(!!!)

Only upon the second completion (and having to likely remortgage one’s house in order finance it) does one get the actual ending 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Do you all remember some of the sly tactics the game designers utilised in order to keep you pumping coins into their machines also?

Final Fight for instance, in which when one ‘dies’, it flicks to a scene depicting one’s chosen character strapped to a load of dynamite and desperately trying to blow out the fuse, giving you only ten seconds to dump in some more cash in order to save them from said perilous fate 😱 That was brilliant! 👍🏻

Final Fight, Street Fighter 2, Marvel Vs Capcom. Capcom were the kings of arcade fighters, side scroller or 1v1

Gradius/Nemesis, Salamander and Twinbee. Konami were to shooters what Capcom were to fighting. Didn't like Konami's fighting games though. People used to and still do wax lyrical about their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, but I thought it was kinda dull and the combat felt "spongy" if that makes sense

A lot of the classic arcade games I've played as an adult using emulators (MAME), as I was too young to go to arcades in the 80s

Most of the games being mentioned I never played at the arcade, but usually the decidedly ropey (or rarely excellent) home computer versions.

By the time I was old enough to go to arcades, they were very much in decline.

A few I played in the only town centre arcade that was still going by the mid 90's were Virtua Striker, Virtua Cop, Marvel Vs Capcom and I recall some weird isometric Sonic the Hedgehog game that used a trackball to control it.
