What’s your favourite 3 European cities & why ?

Dubai & Nottingham

Just added Venice to my list, absolutely beautiful in winter, all misty & atmospheric.

I like how compact the main island is and you can get everywhere easily on foot. Been here less than 24 hours and already done 37,000 steps. It’s more photogenic than Lisbon or Seville even, winter is nice and quiet , practically no tourists. The coffee, food and wine is the best.

What are your top cities & why ?

North West

Dubrovnik in Croatia. Beautiful city, combination of Mediterranean, Balkan, Greek and Turkish influences.

Sarajevo in Bosnia. Same as above, though I found the people to be extremely friendly and amazing. Great food.

Krakow in Poland. Clean city, well maintained, lots to sight see. Cheap and friendly locals.

Edinburgh

Paris. It was the one city I longed to visit. I finally did and loved it as much as I thought I would. Better still it made me love myself a little more.

I've now been 3 times and I'm always planning a trip back. There's a reason why "Paris is always a good idea."

Verona. Just beautiful. Stood on Juliets Balcony and cried. Just loved the city and the feel of it.

Edinburgh. It's home and there's so much more to it than some of the tourist hotspots.

MADERIA Wherever I lay my hat

Split. Beautiful old town, great bars and restaurants, on the Adriatic, jumping off point to so many amazing islands

Ljubljana. Cute, quaint, great vibe, easy access to the Julian Alps

Barcelona. Culture, nightlife, great food and bars, beach, easy to combine with a hiking or ski trip

Tough choice tho as there are so many great cities

I was torn between Split and Dubrovnik. I preferred Dubrovnik for the city itself but Split is much better located for the island hopping.

Two of those on my list this year ! I’ve never really connected with Paris , I found it big, busy, touristy and quite hard work! I dint like crowds too much, but Verona attracts me & I Love Edinburgh

Very few mentions for Rome

I personally loved it, history around every corner - get off the beaten track and it’s not expensive either . Sharing a decent pizza , caprese salad and a fizzy water for less that you’d pay in Prezzo.

Seville and Edinburgh get honourable mentions too, though Seville is far too hot in the summer months.

Berlin - the city has my heart, it offers everything I could possibly want. I have visited over 20 times. I had the opportunity to move there in the 00's and didn't. One of lifes regrets.

Budapest - architecural beauty combined with some urban decay, my favourite mix, plus the thermal spa's. 'Shoes on The Danube' is one of most poignant monuments I've ever visited

Porto - hilly as fuck, but again just lovely. The port warehouses, the beach, the countryside surrounding. I guess I got to see it before tourism really took off there and also as something as an insider as I dated a guy from there for 8 years

Tonypandy.

This is really hard. So many places I love.

Riga. Went first in the winter and fell in love with it. Amazing people, so much to see, cheap and fun.

Krakow. Keep going back. Something about the place and the people that keeps me hooked, plus they have amazing craft beers.

Split. Fantastic architecture, wonderful history, good food and phenomenal scenery.

(Also, Prague, Tallinn, Brno, Dubrovnik, Zadar, Bratislava, Berlin, Gdansk, Poznan, Rome, Venice.....and so many others)

Costa Blanca Spain...

As a bit of a history geek Rome just has to be my number one. Even got to see the Pope on our last trip.

Did Budapest a couple of years ago and loved it. Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, the spa's and yes the Shoes on the Danube is very poignant. Oh and for someone who grew up playing the silver ball, the pinball museum is a must.

Enjoyed Prague and Madrid among plenty of others but I'd still (just) give Barcelona the third spot.

La Rambla, St Josep market and the legacy of Gaudi. Also I think the only major city to have its own nudist beach.

Florence - just a gorgeous city. Going there feels like going home.

If any of you are unsure of cities, do some day trips

This time of year, providing you live near a decent sized airport, there's normally first out, last back same day flights available at reasonable prices

I did this back in 2018 - did Dublin, Amsterdam, Cologne, Copenhagen and Bruges over around 10 days

Saves on hotel bills (which are rarely cheap in a city) and allows you to taste the city at not much expense

The ones that get you, you can go back and enjoy for longer, the ones you didn't enjoy, well, you can be glad you didn't book for longer

Tough call!

I like Lisbon as a city, but it’s so crowded that it puts me off.

I honestly, truly, don’t understand the hype about Barcelona and Sevilla. At all. I much prefer Madrid or even Zaragoza and Leon…

I loved, loved, loved St. Malo in France. And of course Paris has its time and place- but Montpellier is absolutely gorgeous!

I have a very soft spot for Naples. it’s colourful, it’s chaotic, it’s loud… it’s life on the fast lane, lol. And you’ll never go hungry there!

We are very lucky indeed to have so many beautiful cities/places a couple of hours’ flight away.

Add a few more , Wroclaw is lovely , like Poland in general it’s very cheap , lively as a big university city , with a nice riverside settling , thought the ‘old town’ was rebuilt after the war , despite looking old!

It’s like a smaller , less crowded version of Krakow

Lisbson is far too hilly for my liking as for someone who said Naples , it’s the biggest shithole I’ve ever been to (and I’ve been to Luton)

Full of swarthy youth on scooters who all look as though they’re gonna mug you

Cadiz is the only Andalusian city I’ve not visited, it’s on my list. What’s it like ? "

It's essentially an island, only joined to the mainland by thin strip of land with the Atlantic on three sides and good city beaches. It has a great rebellious nature, long history of political independence and is the only big Andalusian city with no bullring.

Good food and nighttime culture, beautiful old food market and a wild Carnival, one of Spain's biggest. Also an easy train ride from Seville or Jerez.

I think all the 'big' cities like Paris, Rome, London and Barcelona are worth at least one visit for the experience but they seem increasingly less attractive. The tourist parts are so crowded and the non tourist parts are often dirty and unsafe. Far better and more affordable smaller City options IMHO.

Lisbon is nice in October. I didn’t experience too many crowds. But as I’m primarily there for Photography , I’m normally up before Sunrise. I’m taking a siesta in the afternoon and then catching the sunsets so avoid crowds as much as possible, and seek out neighbourhoods. Nothing worse than a cities top 10 Instagramable spots for sunset

For me, Barcelona has nothing other than the Gaudi architecture & seville is an average city but over Triana Bridge is just the most phenomenal local flamenco scene even better than Sacramente in Granada.

Totally agree. I was kind of expecting that with Venice I didn’t realise how small it was - wandering around at night at this time of year I’ve almost got the place to myself. I like that there’s no main centre with all the regular shops McDonalds everything there’s just none of that. I can’t even find a proper ATM. And having no roads and traffic is such a unique & nice feature.

Oooh… being only 90 minutes drive away from Edinburgh might skew my impression of it…. It’s nice for a night out but doesn’t make my top 3

Can I give you my out of the box 3

1. Copenhagen…. Good night out, expensive on the beer side

2. Reykjavik…. Absolutely blindingly good night out, gorgeous during the day… expensive though!

3. I wanted to put a German city here… if you want football then Dortmund, if you want beer then Munich, if you want a place where you can get away with never speaking German ever, then Kaiserslautern… but a mixture of everything would be koln

Honourable mention goes to the night I had in Moscow… never go drinking with Russians people… Russians ambulances are weird!

Just visited Prague - challenger for best city I’ve ever experienced. Great architecture, clean streets, friendly people, lots to see & do, great food and drink. Very hard to find a negative.

Love the history of Rome - turning a corner onto 1500+ y/o beautiful buildings is an experience in itself, especially at night.

Did enjoy spending time in Como (although was my first Italian city, so may be a little biased).

Look forward to seeing which others can make it into the top 3

London, there’s just always something new to see, love taking the twists and turns of alleyways and seeing where you end up

Milan, the Navigli grande district. So many bars, cafes, restaurants, pattiseries along the canal. Mixed with little bookshops and galleries it’s just heaven especially if you love people watching

York, I just never tire of it 💕
