Most cars are fitted with LED headlights now instead of the old halogen ones, which are brighter and cause more glare.

Nope. I hate the stupidly bright lights on some models. Especially 4x4's where they sit higher than standard cars. You either get blinded head on or can't see a thing in your mirror.

They might increase visibility for the person using them, but it's a ball ache for everyone else. Especially in rainy weather.

Also, not keen on the LED auto light switch. As, it' goes to full beam and a car comes around the corner

I'm trying to drive the car and turn the headlights off to stop the other person being dazzled. Then realising that the 'ronseal' switch is supposed to be auto, but I just don't trust it as I grind to a near standstill.....similar to a fridges light. Does it really go off, when the door is shut? Schrodinger eat your heart out.

Bright lights are like penis size it not how bright/big they are it's how you use them. I do a lot of driving on unlit country lanes and bright lights are a godsend but so many people don't dip lights when approaching or following others my car has auto dipping lights with much quicker reactions then me and also they follow bends in the road so don't shine into cars on corners. I would not want to do back to old bulbs. I bet a lot have auto dipping lights and active cornering not switched on or are too ignorant to dip their lights

It's the old rabbit in the headlights syndrome, most people have a tendency to stare into the oncoming headlight if only for a split second, and that's enough to cause temporary blindness as your iris closes in reaction to the light. I was taught by my dad and my driving instructor to look above the lights or slightly to the side but never directly into them. It takes a lot of practice, but I never have any issues with oncoming headlights no matter how bright, and I wear specs which is supposed to be even worse.

i have issues after ocular shingles last yrar. sainsbury's garage sell night driving glasses that really help. it isnt just the brightness, its also the high level of blue in led and hid lights.

the glasses are only 8 quid, ok very dorky, but its dark.. whos gonna see you..

The lights are too bright but the other issue, in my opinion is that car manufactureers built cars with the ability to change the height level of the lights. (I do know why they did it but) it seems that many drive now regardless of the load in the car with the lights aimed so high up that others are constantly blinded.

Someone mentioned above about when approaching a car and dipping your lights so they can see to pass you etc... i still do this as i'm old and curteous but few others do, in my opinion.

When I drive my low sports car,and an SUV comes up behind,the lights shine in the rear view mirror.If I drive my pick up,the lights are really dim,get MOT advisory,meaning to replace.Rarely drive it at night.

Yes I've noticed this too OP. Also that the position and height of the lamp on the car is playing a part in that where it looks like they've got their full beams on. Alot of the time, they do as there's too many idiot drivers but sometimes it's a 4x4 or huge new car that's lights seem to be higher up.... 😒

It seems to be a free for all situation, peopke fitting whatever lights they want. Even different ones on each side. Often one missing. Irresponsible people that are increasingly sadly populating our society. It's the all that matters is me brigade. Thanks for your thread though. The design requirements for headlights have changed, no longer do lights have have a bias to the left and a now have beam pattern that is essentially flat.

This is testing that I now do as a daily requirement.

Manufacturers had to make both left and right hand pattern headlights, now one headlight does both right and left hand drive.

This is why you notice it more, add in the vastly improved design and understanding of optics and you get dazzled.

Another thing I have noticed is the way they configure the indicator light within the light cluster can make them difficult to notice particularly in daylight when most also seem to have the front lights on.

I have to put my hand in front of my eyes when I give way to oncoming vehicles and they flash to thank me. It's eye watering when you get hit several times with full beams in quick succession.

I dislike flashing of lights to say thanks at night - I understand why people do it but because modern lights are now so bright it just blinds you. I think we should just stop that practice from now on.

Standard scania truck lights are bright to start with and I have additional lights on the roof and grill which are brighter still.

I prefer the older bulbs as they can be replaced for about £5. People won’t be happy with the repair bill when sealed led headlamp units needs to be replaced.

Same with the cameras instead of mirrors, they go down and the bill for them can go up very quickly, instead of replacing it with a cheap mirror.

I learnt the other day, after some tit on a building site put a barrier into my headlight, that the entire unit needs replaced and cost the company who done the damage £800 just in parts.

Tell me about it. I had to pay £900 for a passenger side headlight when some idiot in a 4x4 reversed into me and that was the cheapest I could find it used, the dealer price was worse. Long live the Halford's bulbs for a fiver.

They certainly seem to be extremely bright especially on newer models of vehicles. I'm glad that they can see all the way to the moon but the rest of us can't! Clearly they must pass H&S and be ticked off but they're really not fun when your're driving in the opposite direction.....
