I was thinking recently about gender and a move away from traditional gendered ideas in society. And I talked about this with some friends but what follows seems to be what I have called the crisis of infinite masculinities/ femininities. What does it mean to us to be man or woman in a world where we’re moving away from ideas of what gender and sex have meant to our existence.

But anyway it got me thinking about change in general. How open are you to change in terms of ideas? What about ones that form your understanding of who you are, like gender or race? Do you find the changes to our understanding of things hard to keep up with and even not worth keeping up with? I know the day will come when my daughter says ‘Dad, that’s not like that anymore’ and I’ll be faced with the decision to push back or be open to learning.

Are you afraid of these changes?

I feel that what other people choose to define themselves as has absolutely no effect on me.

I tend to think that those who do have an issue with what they perceive is their own scope - I want others to align with my choice to make it fit with my perception, rather than adapting perception to fit others wishes.

I have ways embraced change in my work and personal life. It's the only certainty in life after all. In wider society - at the risk of stating the obvious - some changes are positive, some not so much.

I prefer to think in terms of masculine and feminine energies and that we possess both to a lesser or greater extent and need to tap into them given the situation.

Masculine is logic based and problem solving

Feminine is nurturing and empathetic

As such, when my child comes to me with their bumped knee then I need to tap into the masculine to make sure she's okay and there is or (more likely) isn't any actual harm. Then she needs me to be feminine, give her a cuddle and help her deal with her abject stupidity and the emotional fallout that resulted. I mean, climbing the shelves to get something she can't reach! I've raised and idiot.

As for your statement of fact that we're moving away from ideas of what gender and sex have meant for our existence, speak for yourself. There have always been two genders and there have always been multiple sexual identities.

I'm not afraid of these changes, but I am worried about the stress caused by challenging certain gender roles that were once commonplace. I guess what I mean by that is it's great that everyone can do as they want, working in whatever industry they please and pick up whatever skills they want.

But I suppose for me, the challenge has come from wanting to be a more well-rounded human being, which means having a good career but knowing how to clean and cook properly as a way to challenge what was previously considered a female role. But in doing so, I realised I know nothing about stuff like cars and DIY and I can't see myself having the time to do and be everything and I guess there's stress that comes from wanting to be able to do it all. I'm not sure if I just rambled while saying nothing there 😅

This strain certainly exists. And that’s super interesting to think about. I am not good at DIY stuff - my fiance does it in our house. She knows about drills and other tools we need, I know nothing. I think it’s important to remember we can’t be everything. That’s the beauty of life- there’s help we can get and like you say, now it comes in many gender forms. It’s based on who is interested in it.

I think the older we get it'll be hard to adapt to change unless we're consciously aware of keeping our minds open to change.

When my kid was little, we were walking home from school and he said his teacher had instructed the whole class to ask their mums to get out their sewing boxes for some costume that was needed. I asked him what he thought of that and he said he thought it was funny. and I asked why he thought it was funny? and he said picturing me with a needle and thread. I said, that's right. Because you know, we DO have a sewing box at home but it isn't mine. He said, it's dad's, of course. And we talked all the way home about the things I do and the things his dad does. It was pretty great.

Society changes and we change with it.

I find it nice for people to be able to be whom they want to be and to not get shit poured over them for it.

Personally, I was out in Nottingham on Saturday night and ended up in a straight bar full of Goths. They couldn't have been happier to have me there. It was lovely.

My kid started educating me about gender and sexuality when he was 10. I thought I new things but I can tell you my vocabulary is ten times bigger than it used to be.

I love it. Human expression is a beautiful thing.

I think in twenty or thirty years that the mix of gender, sexuality and neurodiverse identities is going to explode so strap in folks because the audhd enby trans fem demi boy's are just the beginning!
