Part of my goals for this year was to get into photography more (ideally portrait or art nude stuff) and I have just bought my first off camera light (Godox TT685) and an umbrella modifier.

First attempts have been promising but curious for tips/ideas for my first session with a real human who isn’t me (she is someone I know on here).

If you have insta check out Sarah Hagen photography. She even did a guide called not a dick pic. She does videos with photography tips and could be a good source of inspiration. And maybe the tips would be useful too.

Get the light and composition right in camera.

Too many people believe they can fix everything in post production. Get as much right in the moment as possible.

Although do shoot in RAW because more information recorded to tweak later if necessary.

The biggest improvement to photography for me over the years was having the right glass. It is very expensive to buy but makes a huge difference, fixed focal lengths make for far better portrait photography than variable focal lenses. Can also rent glass at reasonable prices for weekends etc far cheaper than £1000+ for decent lenses.

It is too soon for my to invest in a decent prime lens - I have a Sony A7 and a reasonable zoom lens and there is no way I am even going to be getting near the limits of that lens in the near future.

Agree with the post processing comment - I used to shoot a lot of 35mm stuff when I was young and this “fix it after” approach feels odd. I do like the fact that I can get rapid feedback with the digital camera. I saw a Sean Tuck video about just changing the flash intensity to get what you want rather than mucking around with meters etc and that worked very well for me on my first couple of attempts.

I don’t think nerves will be her problem but the pose ideas are definitely mine!
