Just confessed/admitted to a company i owed them more money that they thought i did.

Would you have done the same or stuck with what the company stated?

Tough one. I'm a believer of a swings and roundabouts philosophy...you save some money in this instance but at some point may get overcharged for something without realising...or get charged for something well over the odds. Also reckon uf they aren't as clever as you for spotting an error then they don't deserve that money. BUT...guess it ultimately depends on the amount of money we're talking and whether it was a large company vs a little local business etc

I put petrol in my motorbike once, then decided to put some more in. They only charged me for the 1st fill. I didn't realise until later in the day, but I went back and paid for it.

They would have known anyway

But in Sassy case I wonder why she told the company that she owes more

Is it a company that can work out the billing and update later? If yes I will tell them and pay off the exact amount

But if it is a one off buying I just pay what they charge me for

well the price the letters said id owed them was only about 10% of what i did owe

id just rather clear my arrears and be fair whilst i have the funds then get caught out short when the company realised

Whether they would know or not is not the point. The question is would you be honest?

Same here. I know what I owe so I'd want to pay it.

Both of us think that honesty is the best quality a person can have so no you are not too honest for your own good. My dad once bought some trousers in Matalan, they charged him two quid. When he got home and realised he drove back and told them, the lady put them through the till and they were two quid but he said he could look himself.in the eye knowing he had paid the right price.

I do believe in karma and it always affects someone if you are not honest. By you owning up you may have saved the person who made the error his/her job.

Well done you

I have on a couple of occasions put things on the till in shops and when I have got home realised they hadn't been put through. I haven't gone back as that was not my fault, the things were there in front of the cashier I did not hide them they did not do their job properly.

I also remember going through a self service till and thinking I had put a bra through, went to leave the shop and alarm went off. I went back to the store detective with the receipt and gave it to him. He took tag off bra put it in bag and I left. Wasn't till I was sorting out what a friend owed me for her things I realised bra hadn't gone through. I was mortified but did not go back as I didn't want to get store detective into trouble.

I (B) like to think I'm honest. I will give someone back their money if they overpay me and I'd like to think people will give it back if I give them too much change.

I'm always finding phones & purses in the back of my cab I will endeavour to return them. I found an iPhone recently and my children begged me to keep it but it was returned.

However I did get away with a kitchen roll at the self service till once. I only found out when I got home. I thought tesco wouldn't miss the 30p and it would have cost me more to return it.

For me its all circumstances, if tesco didnt charge me for half my shopping i wouldnt be rushing back. If it was a small local shop then i would.

As for this payment, if it was a one of id keep quiet, if it was a bill you pay monthly then they would realize their error, personally id keep the money to one side in the bank and wait for them to catch up, while its in my bank its gaining interest

I would have been honest about the mistake. As it is better to be up front about it rather than have the company chase you for the money months or even years later when they finally catch up.

Honesty is best. I was in a well known restaurant a few days ago and ordered a drink, starter and main course. When the bill came I realised that I had not been charged for the drink. Could have kept quiet and just paid as I would have saved myself £3 but as any till shortages usually come out of the wages of the staff member who made the mistake I queried the bill and paid the correct amount.
