And i don't mean the normal Monday am depression!

I've really hit a wall at work and it's affecting my mental health.

I've been doing the same type of job for 20 years and just suddenly thought... I can't stand this anymore.

Trouble is, it's not like I've harboured a dream to do anything else that i could realistically change to now.

I'm just not the happy, positive person i was 5 years ago.

I am seeing the doctors and they have recommended some CBT. Hope it helps.

Anyone else had something similar?

Thanks

Gra

I think the first thing to do is look at what you can control. What do you like about it that you think you could do somewhere else? What are your transferrable skills?

Taking control by choosing to do some retraining or taking other actions outside your workplace can help you feel like you can make some progress

Brum - ish

Does your company have an employee assistance programme you can talk to? How’s your relationship either your manager?

I think, in terms of work, you need to think about what you’d like to be different. Can you change it in the job you’re in? If it’s fundamental could you look at jobs that wouldn’t have those characteristics?

It does sound like you’d get value from supporting your levels health before looking at anything else perhaps. Or at least, while you search.

Thanks.. I think my next move is outside the organisation. I will look at my skills and how I can retrain if needed

Yes, I worked in schools right up til 2017, but to be fair, I’d thought for a year before I left, it would be easier to stack shelves in Asda, no responsibilities, no shitty/pushy parents who think their child is an angel!

So I got a tenancy for a farm shop, been here 8 years, just sold it & now moving to Wiltshire & doing markets!

They’ve recommended Cock & Ball Torture?

That WILL take your mind off things…

I’m in a similar situation - I’m fed up of working in large corporate companies or putting up with government bureaucracy- I’m lining up a couple of opportunities with small firms where I know I’ll be happier. Then I’m sailing around the world before I’m too old.

You can make changes - break your 20 year indentured and institutional mindset. It’s never too late or too difficult to make changes - it just feels that way.

I'll swerve the C&B therapy thanks!

As you say, it maybe a mindset issue i have, been far too cosy for too long. Have to think about next career...

What was the most difficult part?

Bureaucracy??

Finance?

When you start to dread going, don't go. Find something else.

Serious question does it matter?

Can you switch your mind off at work do it on autopilot? If they pay you for that and it doesn’t bring too much stress focus on making the most of your non working life?

Went through that for 10 years. Tried allsorts to work my head out. Went to a career coach who put me through some psychometric analysis and then recommended I do the job I was already doing!

Turns out it wasn't the job but the company. Now I do it for myself and I'm much happier.

I also realised I wanted a portfolio career to satisfy different parts of my personality.

As the Cheshire Cat says, if you don't know where you're going then it doesn't matter which road you take.

Conversely, if you do know where you're going the route becomes clearer.

I've committed 26 years to a company. I went on holiday for a week, came back to be turned round at the threshold to the business and told to work from home. That was in August. They put me under investigation that turned into a witch hunt. I left with a great settlement at the end of December. It's the best kick up the bum I've needed. Off now to do a job that is the polar opposite to what I did. Less money but the settlement will top me up for at least 3 years. Feel very lucky indeed.

Lot to be said about job satisfaction, I spent 19yrs doing a job I loved until Covid came along in 2020 pay wasn’t good but I was treated like an human being, I have had heath problems for many years but did what I could, had a job for a couple of years until last year I enjoyed it but Boss was a complete arse and showed no respect to my health conditions I felt I was single-handedly keeping his company running he was using tactics like saying he would close the company if I didn’t work, and it badly affected my mental health, glad I got out within a couple of months his company was no more, I did have another job for a few months in the summer but again it was getting too much with heath problems I mentioned, the happiest I’ve been last few years was working voluntarily (unpaid) in a charity shop a few days a week during Covid, this year I’m determined to look after number 1
