Has anyone ever been hacked on here? If so what did you do? For clarity I think we might have been.

The are some easy and simple steps to take to being safe and secure online.

1) use different complex passwords. Never reuse the same one(s)

2) having a longer password is more secure. Use 3 random words that would not normally go together.

3) if you ever think your password has been hacked or breached, log in and change it

4) use MFA (multi factor authentication) where it is an option.

These are all layers of security you can apply to mitigate the risk.. it's not a silver bullet though..

It's the same approach as having more then one door lock on your house.

I’ve seen new profiles saying they have had to create a new one due to being hacked, does this really happen? what would anyone expect to find on our profiles apart from pictures we don’t necessarily want public

Stay calm. Unplug your computer/device from the Internet and Wi-Fi, avoid restarting as this is one it will install itself. Using another computer or device find the instructions to secure it or take it to a professional

To start with they can check to see if the email addresses and password are used to log into other web sites..

It's springboarding to get access to other information.

They could also try to talk with the people you are talking too.

Quick! They’re hacking into the mainframe!

What’s happened to make you think you’ve been hacked?

No, but it's relatively easy to "hack" most people's accounts, because they leave their keys under their doormats, and their computers have passwords like "qwerty" and "radical".

..oh, I didn't need the key after all.

I assume that none of them were ever hacked. It's inevitable generally unattractive single men who say this. I'm still trying to work out why anyone other than the missus would want to know what they'd been doing.

Change the account email and password. Problem solved.

It’s not impossible, again using weak passwords with repetitive sequences or easy to guess words makes it easier.

2factor authentication where available is one of the best tools you can use.

Not correct..

If you use a password and it was been hacked on on web site. You will need to change it on the other web sites too.

The hackers have automated tools that scan billions of web sites to see if it's used on other sites. They will check common sites, like Facebook, online email, social media etc..

This is exactly why MFA is critical. To be honest, Passwords will be a thing of the past very soon, more and more sites are using OTP’s via SMS to authenticate every login

It's getting there, but is very slow..

Fab for example does not have the option.. really should do to be honest.

If a site doesn’t support MFA, you should not share that password and make it a long password - the more characters the longer it takes for the hash to be decrypted, if it’s over nine, even a rainbow crack would take months

Type your password into Google to see if anyone else is using it for anything.

If they are, send them a polite email explaining that this is your password, and asking if they could please use another word for their project instead.

A tip to protect yourself from rainbow table attacks is to salt your passwords.

To do this, add the word "salt" at the end of your password. This will thwart any attempts at rainbow attacks by making the password hash unique to you.

The solution is named after sea salt, which stops rainbows forming in sea water. The inventor lived near the sea at the time of coming up with this the more you know!

I’m not quite sure that’s what salt means in the context of cryptography

Salt is random characters added by the encryption algorithm to make it harder to reverse the encryption. Just use a strong long password that isn’t shared across websites.

Yes, "salt" was chosen randomly 🙂 although honestly, is anything truly random?

It's actually in the site FAQ's. Here's the advice.

I think someone else is logging into / has "hacked" my account!

If you think someone has gained access to your account you should immediately change your password on here via your change password page and on your associated email account if you're using web based email. You should run anti-virus and anti-spyware software to ensure that you don't have a keylogger or spyware installed on your computer.

We take the security of our site and database very seriously. The database server is on a seperate physical server behind a firewall to which only site owners have access, via a specified IP address. All passwords are encrypted and neither site owner nor admin have accesss to them.

The following are some common ways that accounts on Fab are compromised. Please be careful to avoid them!

1: Members share their password with friends, partners, lovers (this is the most common cause of "compromised" accounts).

2: Members login on other people's computers who run a keylogger (we see this via the login history of both parties, matched via verifications!).

3: In a couple, the partner changes/removes the profile and denies it (we see this because we record IP address and verify password of all account deletions).

4: The users use the same password on all sites they're on (including dodgy ones run by people who don't encrypt passwords), and site admins on other sites login using their info. On Fab, passwords are hidden from all users and admins.

5: The users email account is shared/compromised and the "hacker" gets their password from our initial signup email.

Seeing as your account is quite new and very bare of pictures or any meaningful information, I reckon it’s almost certainly your mate fucking with you.

Or….

Are these random unexplained convos with gay or bi guys?

A good way to pick a password is to choose four words from a book by opening pages at random and pointing at a part of the page with your eyes closed. This creates a secure password - a "passphrase" - that's long and easy to remember.

If you use the same passphrase as your username then it makes it much easier to remember, and will give a quirky, "random" vibe to your profile.
