" I think the promotion of warm hubs and suggestions of looking in on elderly neighbours are great. I do think that the main news channels have gone a bit overboard on telling people that ice is slippery. | |||

If it looks cold - put a coat on If it looks like rain - take a brolly If it's snowing - see rain and add sturdy shoes If the snow sticks - build a snowman and go sledging" I bet the people in Little Bollington agree it's all scaremongering about the weather, after the Bridgewater Canal collapsed and flooded it with a zillion cubic metres of water and ditto the next village from us which was completely submerged on NYD - people are out of there homes and will be for many months and now we're likely to get a good dose of snow to make the clean up that bit harder. We haven't been affected by the weather in the slightest and don't intend going out in the snow, but we're not so complacent that we think it'll never happen to us, or as dismissive just because we're alright, Jack. | |||

" In Leeds there’s definitely scare mongering. They’ve even pre-emptively cancelled bin collections tomorrow and throughout the week. Some businesses have announced they won’t be open Sunday, and in my workplace people have said they won’t be in on Monday. It’s just normal winter weather. In fact it’s pretty mild compared to winters past. I’m not sure how those in power in the media/councils get away with being so OTT. They need to realise not everyone is a wimp. | |||

That collapse is due to poor engineering of a man made canal built 250 years ago. It’s not a natural tributary. It’s a crappy embankment that hasn’t gone through the thousands of years of compression and compacting that real riverbeds and valleys go through to maintain their strength. So yes it’s fear mongering to try and frame that as something else. | |||
