Bag End..

Hey Sexy Fabsters. I am out of shape and was wondering if anyone had downloaded the chair fitness apps. I don't want the expense of the gym and was looking at the said app.

Any advice for a over 50 with a dad bod of getting back in shape.

Ta very muchly.

abruzzo Italy (and UK)

I’ve not tried the chair workout/yoga options but there’s some good free yoga stuff on you tube that I use and it certainly helps. Try Yoga with Adrien, she does these 30 day sequences, so 20-30 minute routines every day for 30 days which get you very much into a routine of doing something physical every day.

Cut back on alcohol, eat much more chicken (protein), walk as often as you can (cardio) and do as many air squats as you can every day (muscle is energy dense and wants calories, this puts muscle in your legs and glutes which are your biggest muscle group).

It moves the angle of your hips, knees and ankles much more than walking too, I've been doing them recently due to stiffness but when you think about ageing and general stability, keeping knees and ankles mobile is one thing to prevent surgery as well as trips and falls.

Just to mention, had our aunt over at Christmas and she does something called YATS. It's upper body so simple over head Y shape with arms, rocking them back not just stretching them up. A is down at waist, again rocking back behind waist. T stretching them horizontal, again rocking them back. S is one arm above head, one behind back, each curling or pushing as far horizontal as poss then swapping arms. Simple daily exercise to keep shoulder joints mobile.

couple, us we him her.

Firstly as your over 50 out of shape I'd strongly recommend going to your GP getting the old MOT first.

However walking is a great way to start and swimming don't let people who really don't understand sway you into going too hard too soon.

Gentle and steady, get into the habit first then look at progressing from there.

Didn't start triathlon until early 50's and several Ironman's later can honestly say we're both fitter than we've ever been. Would highly recommend swimming and cycling as both are low load bearing and will get you in shape both physically and cardiovascularly. Once you are stronger you can pick up the running and you won't look back..... apart from at the bank balance you once had, because once you get the bug you'll spend fortunes on events and equipment!

Don't mean to jump in on every comment - knew a guy who couldn't swim (or just didn't swim) so walked with a floatation aid. He went from over 20 down to around 15st.. all he did was walk from shallow to chest height, turn and walk back.

Shagging? Shagging??

Water resistance - hydrotherapy pools are common in rehabilitation, again low load bearing on joints and injury sites but allows more stress in a supported way

If just looking to lose fat walking + calorie defecit is all you ever need

To truly maximise results building muscle through resistance training would be ideally paired alongside it and would require a gym, one I go to is only 25 quid a month and is really well equipped so not a massive investment
