Minor cry for help - books/podcasts/micro learning

I need to get/be better.

I don't have a lot of time in my life for "me". But I do have a lot of time for podcasts. I listen to the usual man stuff (Joe Rogan etc) and I want to expand, but I want to learn and think about things. You may ask "stuff like what?" And I can't answer you, as I don't know, I just need a broad range of things and narrow it down but by bit. Id even consider micro learning that I keep seeing plastered all over the place.

I just need a spark to interest me.

At the moment I don't feel. I'm neither happy, nor sad. I just exist.

My kids can bring me joy. But that's pretty much it.

Don't know if I need to change my mindset, life, habits.

But I think this might be a step in the right direction, so any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of podcasts.

The Rest is History for an engaging discussion to learn about history.

Exploding Helicopter to learn about movies in which helicopters explode.

Yeah think I know where you’re coming from.

Especially if you are not really into 1 particular thing.

Would advise Joe Rogan in my view is not the best to be listening to.

BBC sounds is free and a lot of the stuff on Radio 4 is very informative and interesting eg briefing room, Americast, conspiracy land etc.

Also would advise taking 1 day a month to do what you want if that be go to the pub, concert, museum or anything just what you want to do. You will come back more refreshed to real life.

Huberman labs podcast.

Plenty on there about mindset, and lots of interesting ideas about health and wellbeing in general.

Radio 4's podcasts. Look on the BBC for 50 (More) Things That Made The Modern Economy. On a similar vein, A History of the World in 100 Objects.

Diary of a CEO. Some really really great guests. Includes the usual entourage of ‘well-being’ figureheads and business moguls… but also just some damn interesting people

I would also add in the Founders podcast series. It focuses more on the autobiography side of things with historys greatest entrepreneurs but there is some damm interesting knowledge to learn on there.

OP I support your desire to improve yourself but I really don’t think a scatter gun approach to trying to find something to spark an interest will succeed. You do need something to hang it on initially.

Your profile suggests that you want to keep old age at bay (don’t we all!) - how about doubling down on that and learning about how diet and physical exercise changes as you hit your 40s and onwards? If you are in a rut then it also gives you something practical to focus on.

Yeah, I agree. Recommendations from others are not really gonna help you just because they enjoyed reading them doesn’t mean you will.

For guys 40s is the decade of wisdom and really beginning to make an impact sounds to me like you’re not quite there so I think the advice above is excellent. Looking after your body and your mind is a key part of success in your 40s.

Body and diet, while not where I want them to be. Are well on their way.

While I agree a scatter gun approach isn't the way normally. I've given up so much of myself over the years, I genuinely can't tell you what I'm about anymore other than serving others....and I know that's not me.

Have tempted to call myself Sisyphus.

I'm going down this route hoping something will stick and I can focus on that.

I think there’s something missing that a podcast isn’t going to fill. I’ve have felt, and still do to some degree, exactly as you describe.

Until you address what’s at the core of this, your general anhedonia and lack of spark will remain and distractions won’t resolve the problem.

Invest in some counselling but you have to be prepared to really open up. I suggest this from personal experience.

There is definitely something to this and something I've considered. But I'd have to do some sort of on line therapy

Find something that sparks the joy of reading. Do you like a story? Or a commentary - a fiction with a relevance to real world events, a non fiction examination of a subject, interviews and biography?

Most people only find out what they like by picking something up and trying it, can't hurt to start with a good old fashioned page turner that's just fun to read.

Some great suggestions here.

I'd also suggest looking to find a way to make time for yourself if you can. I know it's hard with family, work, etc but it is possible.

I've started getting up at 6am and having an hour each morning to myself before anyone else needs to get up and built a whole new morning routine which includes exercise and personal dev as well as a high-protein breakfast based around the 30-30-30 rule:

Eating 30 grams of protein within 30 minutes of waking up

Completing 30 minutes of low-intensity exercise

I agree with that, and have usye that line myself.

It's getting the time to go out and do it

Alarm is set for 5, up, loo, wash, make coffee, walk dog, head to work, gym if there is time, work 10-12 hours
