This year I want to read a book a month.

A proper book not from a tablet or phone

What recommendations does everyone have to draw up a list of 12

I’m not into LOTR or GOT, more into real life stories

Thank you

If you like crime I’d recommend the Strike books, anything by Val McDermid and the DCI Ryan books.

your wildest dreams,

You say real life stories, is that fiction or non fiction? There was a thread just recently about biographies people had read, you may get some ideas from there

I used to go to the library and choose one book at random to read. I read some fascinating books that way. Why not nip along to your local library, and choose blind from the biography and autobiography section.

Val McDermid is an excellent story teller. I dread to think what goes on in her head.

My Father used to say read a classic then read a pulp fiction book. So I soon discovered that Gothic Horror and SCI - FI from Stoker to HG Wells to Mary Shelley were regarded as ‘classics’ I suddenly had plenty of interesting books to read.

My advice look at all of the books you are encouraged to read, Catcher in the Rye, To Kill a Mockingbird, Grapes of Wrath etc…but also biographies of anyone you like.

She’s great - but how she dreams these things up…

One I forgot! M J Arlidge.

If you like detective series, then Stuart McBrides books are up there. Same as Peter James "Dead" series.

Other than that. I'd say Anne Franks diary, a company of liars and the book thief are good books. I probably read a book or 2 a week. Soni lose track of what I've read, but all the above stand out.

Lyncoln Rhyme series by Jefferery Deaver. Lots of books so one a month is easy. Really good well written stories. You may remember the Denziel washington / Angelina Jolie film, The Bone Collector. That was a Lync' book.

Start at the begining and read them all.

Cant recommend highly enough

Val McDermid's Forensics: The Anatomy of Crime is a brilliant read, educational and fascinating. Just don't read the blow flies chapter immediately after lunch

Oh and the Peter James, Roy Grace "Dead" series as mentioned by the above. All based in and around Brighton, so if you know the areas its a nice little treat 😁

Educated by Tara Westover is a mind-blowing read

I can also recommend Ant Middleton' autobiographies - he comes across as an arrogant dick/twat but I enjoyed his books - 'The Fear Bubble: Harness Fear and Live Without Limits' and 'first Man In: Leading from the front'

Butter - Asako Yuzuki

The cult Japanese bestseller about a female gourmet cook and serial killer, and the journalist intent on cracking her case, inspired by a true story

There are two things that I simply cannot tolerate: feminists and margarine

For non fiction, gory but fascinating either The Facemaker or The Butchering Art by Lindsay Fitzharris

Both amazing books on the history and methods of surgery and reconstruction

Get a decent translated version of the count of monte christo. It’s a great read, romps along and you can say you’ve read a classic.

Doestrovesky if you want to be clever. Crime and Punishment is a slog but worth it

Please list them here, dont be shy.

I’ve enjoyed the “boss” series by Abigail Barnette. Lots of dom/sub stuff, and a plot.

I’d recommend spending a couple of afternoons in good bookshops.

What one person loves to read another might find unreadable.

good shout! There's lots of 'professional book-reader' type profiles on instagr4m too, plenty of recommendations; find one or two that seem to mirror your tastes and follow them.

For my recommendation though, you say 'real life', and elude to cycling in your profile & comments; try any of the ".... according to G" books by Geraint Thomas, easy but entertaining reads.
