Somewhere In The Ether…

Ey up and ow do good folks 👍🏻😃

Yep, I’m in the mood for a movie binge on those delightful paranoid/conspiracy thrillers as were hugely popular in the 1970’s.

Remember the absolute classic, The Parallax View starring Warren Beatty and you get the idea of exactly what I’m craving.

So….what are your favourites of the genre my good peeps? 😃

My favourite is actually a great TV series but an awful film remake, Edge of Darkness. Anytime I want to watch something that’ll keep me totally concentrated on the screen it’s Bob Peck investigating Nuclear secrets.

I watched the film once and never again.

Another vote for the UK version of Edge of Darkness. It was terrific. It started on BBC2, was repeated on BBC1 within months and won pretty much every award going. Bob Peck's acting, especially in that first episode is beyond tremendous

Not 70s, but there's a film with Mel Gibson and Julia Roberys, called 'Conspiracy Theory' that was ahead of its time in many ways.

As far as I remember, it had all the 'New World Order' conspiracy theory stuff that's now popular online - but made in 1997 before the Internet really blew up!

Ahhh thank you 😃😃 x I’d seen the Mel Gibson film (and was also less than enthralled by it) but never knew of an earlier series. I’ll definitely seek that out.

The late Bob Peck was a superb actor and is very sadly missed ☹️

I’m definitely tracking this one down; As it’s sadly not on any streaming service at the moment that I can see, I might treat myself to the DVD boxset 😃😃👍🏻

I remember that - a great film! Mel bites off Patrick Stewart’s nose(!!!) (Typical Mel Gibson behaviour that) 😜

Update: I have just found my viewing for tonight with one of my all time favourites of the genre: Capricorn One.

For anyone who wants to indulge with me, it’s on Pluto 😃😃👍🏻

Trailer for Edge of Darkness, there are a few spoilers there, but it shows why it is still regularly voted into top tens of telly shows:

😃 Two more classics of the genre: The Manchurian Candidate and Winter Kills - both great films 😃

7 days in May is another excellent example - Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.

A superb film! 👍🏻

Also starring Burt Lancaster, Executive Action which involves the assassination of JFK (and the decidedly shady folks behind it) - Well worth checking out 😃

Somewhere In The Ether…

Future World is another interesting one.

Whilst admittedly not a patch on its classic predecessor, Westworld, it nonetheless succeeds in carving its very own identity with a delightfully paranoid plot involving the androids now running the reopened park and trying to replace world leaders with Android clones (and killing off the originals needless to say!)

It’s rather good fun 👍🏻

I suppose when I’m recommending TV shows I enjoyed both the film version and TV of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.

I have Smileys People lined up to watch next year.

They don’t get much more Political than John Le Carre.

Absolutely brilliant! 👍🏻👍🏻 - both the always superb Alec Guinness playing Smiley in the original series (and subsequently in, Smiley’s People) and the more recent Gary Oldman film 😃😃😃
