"I originally put this on chat by mistake! After a highly respected doctor created a scare about the MMR vaccine causing autism many parents did not get their children vaccinated. If I recall correctly his research was discredited and it turned out that it was funded by a pharmaceutical firm, I think. Parents demanded single vaccines not the triple as this false research said it was safer. This was more expensive but would have made a lot of money for companies selling them. Now we have a measles epidemic. This is a deadly disease. My cousin, who is in his 60s now, ended up profoundly deaf after contracting it as a child." I remember it vividly and I also remember living next to a family with 2 autistic children and mum blamed MMR on both cases. I had mine vaccinated with all routine childhood vaccinations and while I was a bit wary when my neighbour suggested the connection (this is about 15 years ago or so) I weighed up risks and chances and decided the benefit of the tripple injection outweighed the risks.

"Parents also have to take responsibility themselves for believing all the hype. Both my children had the normal injections." I had my daughter done as I thought the potential risks (now found to not actually exist) outweighed the the risk of a deadly disease. But I can completely understand why so many parents refused it - they were, genuinely, misguided by this false research. They cannot have known or understood what was really happening so laying the blame there is a bit unfair in my opinion. Hindsight is always 20/20.

"Please turn off the tv stop reading the media propaganda and go on line and do a bit of research on this and all vaccines/ medicine then make a self educated decision on the subject all may not be just as you once thought..." Agreed - trouble is at that time there was not that much information about and still a lot of hype - parents, me included, were genuinely worried and confused about doing the right thing.

"At the risk of accusations of racism, does anyone know what vaccination arrangements are in place in countries which have been sending kids (along with their parents) to the UK for years? Are they routinely vaccinated in their home country or is it done here? Is it done at all?" That's not what the thread is about.

I don't think that's racism its a fairly sensible question, if you believe that as close to 100% vaccination is the way forward you must ensure that anyone coming to live here is vaccinated too

"Please turn off the tv stop reading the media propaganda and go on line and do a bit of research on this and all vaccines/ medicine then make a self educated decision on the subject all may not be just as you once thought..." so turn off the tv etc and go on line to where exactly..? Wakefield's theories have been proven to be not only factually wrong but also ethically unsound.. yes a cpl of newspapers were part of the issue and the Govt should have and could have taken a firmer line in supporting the vast majority of the medical profession who believe the MMR is by and large safe and the best option.. we now have a situation where one person has died from measles.. how many more..? and just what do you mean by your 'all may not be...'?

"boris johnson doing something right? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-49393279 I dislike anti-vaxxers as much as I dislike flatearthers, chemtrailers etc." Agreed. One of our kids had measles before they were old enough to be vaccinated. You really don't want any child to get it

"The Daily Mail and others should have been stung with hefty fines for peddling false scare stories affecting public health. It's scary that the charlatan former Doctor has had so much profound influence on millions of people's lives for so many years - but it's been the media that have spread disinformation and fears. I don't know what the new UK approach is but hope it will recover higher vaccination rates, to help support herd immunity for everyone "

Completely agree I care for someone who was effected by this at a young age and has various different issues aswell as autism and challenging behaviours..it’s vitally important to have the vaccination in this day and age to now have to declare we are not a measles free country is such a shame
