Who's been?

Fancy a two-centre trip this year with a few days in Bangkok or Pattaya, and then 19 or 10 days chilling by a pool.

Any suggestions or recommendations of how best to enjoy Thailand?

The idea of sitting around a pool in Thailand sounds like a wasted opportunity.

The place is vast and full of contrasts - I've been to Bangkok, Hatyai, Ko Chang, Ko Samet, Hua Hin and other places I can't remember - plus hopped over to Malaysia from the border town of Sungai Kolok.

I've been on a train through the jungle, visited the Khlong Toei slums, stayed on rat-infested islands, and slept in a luxurious skyscraper hotel for under £50 a night (many years ago).

My experience is of a safe country with friendly smiles and an amazing culture - but with a hidden underbelly of an exploited and impoverished population.

Check out Chiang Mai - amazingly laid back place.

Avoid Pattaya, full of middle aged men who can't pull at home.

Avoid Phuket, full of draft dodging Russians.

Manchester / Cardiff

- The Skywalk at Mahanakon Tower in Bangkok (cantilevered glass-floored platform 314m above the city)

- Maeklong street market where a train runs through the centre of the market millimeters from the stalls

- Jungle trekking up to the viewpoint at Ngon Nak Nature Trail (Krabi)

- 'Elephant Hills'

- Bangla Street, Patong Beach, Phuket (think Benidorm on speed), tacky as fuck but has to be seen to be believed!

Such a typical statement from someone that is utterly clueless. There really is lots to do in the Pattaya / Chonburi area that the vast majority never see. Also if you really want to be critical Pattaya is also full of Russian draft dodgers.

Genuinely intrigued, why is this an “utterly clueless” perspective?

Pattaya has its share of middle aged men who can’t pull a Christmas cracker and don’t want to pay for it either; unfortunately, partying is it’s #1 tourist attraction regardless of its natural beauty.

Phuket IS full of draft dodging Russian’s, so is Pattaya, Bangkok and the Thai islands, Samui especially; that said, more Russians in Dubai than anywhere else I’ve visited; can’t blame them, would you fight for Starmer et al.

The last line. I’d say is sensible Russians avoiding illegal war and being killed in a meat grinder So yeah they are probably cool ruskies if they are avoiding it all by being Thailand

That's what I found, an amazing country and people, but even half a look behind the main streets, lights and waterways there's real poverty in looking after any of the beauty there.

Yes indeed there are those as described, but there is also much more going on for those that bother to scratch below the surface.
