Where to start….

Not sex therapy but for mental health and sorting out ‘issues’.

Do you go to your GP or have to looking the good old yellow pages?

Have you had therapy? Was it beneficial or useless?

First step would be the GP who may refer you to the closest mental health team but this process can be long and drawn out. Other than that look for local therapists and see if they offer the kind of therapy that may be beneficial to you. If not sure perhaps a consultation to discuss first would help. An added benefit to this is you will have a degree of choice when choosing a therapist which may make you feel more at ease.

I tried the NHS one and found it didn’t quite help with my anxiety (they focused more on CBT rather than getting to the root cause).

So I went private, she was much better and we got to the root cause of my anxiety, we then worked on it and since then I’ve been a lot better.

Had been doing it for 2 years to work through it all.

Going to go will lead to nothing but a very long wait unless you are a danger to yourself and others. Once said wait is over you will probably be put on bullshit cbt group therapy. If you feel you need help and can afford it go private

It's a very personal choice so whether it works for you or not will be your call. Personally, I wouldn't recommend going through the GP. The waiting lists are awful and you will get categorised rather than prioritised. Finding a private one is better as you can seek out someone who specialises in your needs and is going to have more availability for you. It can be expensive though so very much depends on your circumstances, good luck OP.

Next Door

A chat with thr GP would be my 1st port of call.

If therapy is needed then a GP referral or look private.

Have you got any support programme via your workplace?

Keep in mind that the best therapy happens when you make a good connection with the therapist. It's ok to change until you find one that you like and trust.

If you have the chat with GP you’ll have to be very clear on saying no drugs but talking therapy

CBT and the resources around it are good to a point,(search living life to the full) but some things need counselling. There are pay for therapists too as well and you might get directed to that.

Mindfulness things, the diaries or planners that are available might help too. Basic meditation, CBD gummies

Just had a relative go through some pretty serious shit. I think finding the right therapist helps. Someone 1, you feel comfortable with and 2, someone qualified. They need to be able to say 'this is not my area I am going to recommend you see see someone else', if they are not able to help navigate you through whatever it is you're having problem with.

Without doubt it helped them. The mass of issues, health concerns not least stress was immeasurable and not something general chats with friends would resolve. Much as the wait was 18 months to see them.

I've had it myself over the years, there's been good and bad, have to say the bad has outweighed the good, but if you don't speak about something you'll never know what tools or perspectives are there to give some kind of grounding.

Depends what it's for but I had a poor experience with the GP and my ex so spoke to a few different therapists that I found on Google or through referral. Different techniques such as EFT, CBT,

etc, help with different issues.

A colleague at work possibly the most likeable and intelligent, regularly went to Therapy and is a massive proponent for its success when dealing with his mental health issues.

He’s got me close to convinced that I should seek out a therapist for some of my problems.

He also recently had flotation therapy which I’m considering as he said it was an amazing experience.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

GPS are mostly like robots and will prescribe you drugs , which I believe to be the wrong way , once you are on those it can leave you dependent for life , I believe you have to do what ever you can to fight your mind naturally, I’ve been through many mental health struggles & they will pass , stick in there , we are all prisoners of our own mind

If you can afford to go private I’d recommend it. Waiting lists in the NHS are so long.

You can self refer on the nhs site. By passes the dr and the initial assessment is very fast but the waiting lists are long. I’ve booked to see a private counsellor but it’s costing £45 a session and I think they want you to go weekly.

I swear my therapist will need therapy too once she’s spoken to me

I was lucky enough to have counselling available through work, and for me, it really helped. Being able to unload knowing they don't have any emotional connection to you and are just there to listen and guide.

Worth noting the difference between therapist and counsellor though, chose which is best for you.

Have tried various things from gp to counselling and therapy.

Was fortunate to find a charity that did reduced rate therapy

It has helped but not solved the issues

Good luck op

Brum - ish

If you have an employee assistance programme, they often have counselling - ours for example offers 6 sessions with a potion to extend to 12 in total. Might be a quicker route.

The NHS is more concerned with temporary fixes so will usually give access to CBT related services to help with the present. If you have childhood trauma or issues that you need to get to the root cause of you're better off going privately. I started with counsellors first and gave a few of them a call. Most were honest and said I needed someone with more 'specialised' help. In the end I had trial sessions with 3-4 psychotherapists in the area. I didn't think I could work with most of them but in the end found a psychotherapist that I found helpful. We had sessions for nearly a year (sometimes twice a week!) and it has helped enormously. Good luck.

I have had therapy/counselling for serious depression after the death of my father! I tried the NHS but found my GP seriously lacking in help. He just wanted to get me on antidepressants, had no interest in finding the root cause.

I was lucky that a friend recommended a therapist/counsellor. I had to pay for it and its the best thing I have ever done! Consider looking for a private therapist! Mine worked with me for weeks working through everything! That's was a good few years ago and I have never had any problems since. Hope this helps! Remember you are never alone! There is always someone that been in you position and I guarantee there are loads of us out here that would do anything to help if they could.
