My first memory of school dinners is being made to eat tomato in infant school. I didn't like tomato, and when I was forced to eat it by the dinner lady, I was sick everywhere so my mum was called, and she went mental at the school for forcing me to eat something I didn't like. I've only just started to be able to eat tomato!!!

At Junior school no one ate the mash potato. There was nothing wrong with it, but the old school legend went that someone once found a fly in it, and it was just the done thing not to eat it!! And no one did, at all, no one!!!

My mum used to give me £1.50 every day in senior school. £1 for dinner, 50p for sweets.

It wasn't long before I figured out I could buy a salad for 20p, and carton of juice for 10p, and then have £1.20 for sweets. I used to buy a huge bag of haribo every morning. Still love haribo!!

I am old. I went to school in the 60's. i was and am a veggie so that didnt help. Tables of 6. One person collected food. Head of table shared it out. Some were evil and gave themselves biggest share. Typically a meal was mash, cabbage, meat, gravy. I hated school dinners except for cheese pie. We never had a choice.

I loved school dinners but only had them at junior school.

One of my favourite puddings was a shortcake biscuit with cream and a chunk of pineapple. Oh and I liked it when it was semolina as none of my friends did, so I got to eat theirs.

I was such a goodie two shoes and used to be the table monitor. Loved school dinners but my mum worked in my school so I did have special treatment.

I learnt about desserts from school as we never had them at home.

I mostly liked school dinners - no choice available but generally the food was good. Favourites were minced beef pie and cheese n onion pie the only things I didn't really like were the mashed potatoes (it still makes me shudder to see mashed potatoes served by way of an ice cream scoop (and they always had grey lumps in them), and salad (cos they always put pickled beetroot on and the damned juice got on everything

Pudding were pretty good...favourite one was jam roly poly n custard (yellow). Not overly fond of white/pink/green/chocolate custard. Also liked the rice pud and semolina with either a blob of jam or a handful of raisins.

I do remember once in junior school they served tapioca - no one would eat it and they made the entire school sit in the canteen with the bowls of "frogspawn" in front of them for the whole of the lunch break. It was never served up again.

By the third year (year 9) in secondary school I'd opted out of school dinners - the 60p a week was enough to get me 10 cigs a day mon - fri and then my pocket money sorted the weekend cigs out

We never had school dinners where I went to school as school finished around 1 or 2 pm depending on the lessons. We had a sandwich for the mid morning break and that was it - then home for a cooked lunch. Different school systems - not sure which is better tbh - both have advantages.
