Anyone changed from a set bill each month to a water meter??

I thought my bill seemed high as its just me and a 2 year old and I'm careful with water so just did a quick calculation on moneysavingexpert and it would meay half my monthly bill getting a meter!!!

We have been on a meter for years, it's a lot fairer as your not paying for your neighbour to water their garden or wash their car every coupla days

Great if you're in a small property or live alone. Big houses, and especially ones with multiple bathrooms and large gardens should avoid meters like the plague!!!

Also I think you are responsible for your water meter ? I know that if you have a new gas meter installed you are liable for any repairs or failures . I.e. it becomes your property

Then I would go for it.....this house had a water metre when we moved in and we are paying about half of what we would pay on a normal bill

We would go back to having no meter in an instant. When we have a few of the younger grandchildren over for the weekend, the taps get turned on but not off. Some of them wont get in the same bath water as others. As far as electric goes, the house would look like the illuminations of Blackpool if it was not daytime

I went on a meter 3 years ago and have never regretted it. If I remember at the time, I had an option to change back to non meter at anytime within the first 12 months, so there was nothing to lose anyway, in that if the water meter was costing more I'd have gone back to non meter.

Works for some, not for others. Wish I wasn't forced to have a meter

Meters are usually cheaper but the rule of thumb is if there are more bedrooms than people deffo do it. Even with a family though unless you have a massive garden to water you should be better off.

I don't think that is correct with any of the services, ie gas, electric and water.

The utility supplier is responsible for the pipe or cable up to and including into the meter, the meter is the utility companies property and reponsibility to maintain and keep safe. However the pipes and cables on your side of the meter are your responsibility. In my case my water meter is in the street so I'm responsible for the pipe from 2 foot outside my property and into the property itself, whereas gas and elctric meters are in the house and British Gas and Scottish Power are responsible for the cables into the property upto the meter.

They can also get a court order to access the meter if you refuse them permission enter your property to see the meter or to carry out repairs to the meter or thier cables/pipes.

They would be no different from any other meter...

Gas/electric...

The bigger the house, the more occupants.. the more you use...

Simple...

Look at the small print on your utility bills ! My gas / water metres are inside my home , I have been offered new metres by both companies and in the small print they state that the home owner IS responsible for the upkeep of the new metres where as if we keep the old metres the companies are still liable for these . Might vary from area to area but that's what it says on my contracts !

My water rates cost me around £500 per year but how would I estimate if a meter would be cheaper

I went on the money saving expert site and entered some info , how many baths etc then they gave me an estimate. It's only me and a toddler so we use very little water x

Phone the water company they ask you questions about your useage of baths, showers, washing machines, dish washers, garden watering, car washing and they'll give you an estimate. Ours was spot on and just over 50% reduction in the bill
