A 44 year old man who was facing charges of grooming 14 year old girls committed suicide after a hate campaign launched on Facebook. His boss said; 'The old phrase "innocent until proven guilty" just seems to have thrown out of the window and banished for ever in this country.

'I believe Dave was innocent and as far as I and others were concerned there were no doubts about him.

'Yet some people just assume once someone's is merely accused they are automatically guilty as charged.

'It's terrible that in this day and age people have lived under the threat of the mob even if they are merely accused of wrongdoing.'

Or rather, the mentalities of so many that use it are !

It is so often used as a modern day return to the mob culture that surrounded medieval executions.

That's the way we've become now. The media jumps on any suspect in a case and vilifies them. So many cases have had to be retried because of the press, so many people unfairly convicted by the media. Then the uninformed go onto Twitter and Facebook and retweet or repost the lies and ruin lives.

And it could happen to any of us. Anything you post can be used against you, at any time. You might lose your job, your partner, or even your life, but in a week everyone else has forgotten about it. It's a heartless world.

I use Facebook a lot - but the only people in my friends list are actual friends. People I know in real life. I have full privacy controls on too. I use it to keep in easy and regular contact with friends who live around the world - mostly Greece and Australia.

In the hands of those of a tabloid mentality, it is a dangerous tool.

Far more dangerous than the media itself in my opinion.

It is far easier to follow than it is to lead and follow they do.

Often too blindly and too far.

I think some will always be named - if, for example, the police are looking for a suspect. We also have to consider the idea that we have to keep our justice system open and not secretive - remember the Magna Carta and Habeus Corpus? It's one of the basic principles of our legal system and is there to protect. The moment we allow secrecy things happen behind closed doors and we are all vulnerable. We have seen too often recently the corruption which occurs in our police forces up and down the country, particularly the Metropolitan Police.

Sadly there will always be people about with big pitchforks who jump on the bandwagon wether they know it as truth or not.

You only have to read some threads on the forum where someone complains about a member and you then get 30 odd posts calling the member that they know nothing about all the names under the sun.

Sadly this is the downside of the internet for me as people can post virtually anything and everything and it can spread like wildfire....wether it is the truth or not.

I don't think so. However, for the sake of argument, let's say that he was guilty. It has now never come to trial though no doubt a lot of money has been spent putting the case together as it was due in court. And the victims would not have been able to be heard, and believed. They may feel 'robbed' of justice by this. Either way - guilty or innocent - this was a very damaging campaign for innocent people.

It's a social network site where you can set up your own page. That page can be restricted to your friends or be open to the public. It is so HUGE that moderating it is nigh on impossible although pages can be removed if reported, I think. Usually, though, the damage is done by then.

Not in the same way - my friend is in Australia. When it is day here, it is night there so phone calls have to be timed just right and can work out expensive. Not only that but I can have a chat with a number of friends at the same time, unlike email which is just between two.

You can't join in on family group conversations with an e mail, telephone or letter....nor can you easily track down long lost friends or relatives.

So maybe not just as well?

The problem isn't Facebook. Facebook is the medium, the carrier wave, the broadcasting system by which others can listen (or not).

Social media has enormous power and that power is easily perverted, abused and misused and easily as it is and empowering, positive tool when used correctly. Anyone can get this power and wield it for good or ill - sometimes its done naively, sometimes with malice and spite.

But when it is so easy so get hold of a 'transmitter' that can broadcast to almost the entire planet with few restrictions on its use, you give anyone and everyone a voice heard around the globe...and thats unfathomable power in the hands of many ill-equipped to wield it right into our homes, cars and lives.

I also believe that there are (and have been in some cases for many years) certain crimes in this country for which the accused need to prove innocence because guilt is presumed from the outset. This is fundamentally wrong, and coupled with the power of social media results in the vilification and destruction of lives through the perversion of the fundamental cornerstone of law - that one is innocent until proved guilty.

Either 'trial by media' (social, tabloid or otherwise) must be curtailed, or the only other choice is to enshroud the legal process in secrecy in order to preserve the rights of ALL involved and uphold the fundamental edicts of law in this country.

I fear many more people will take their own lives (or more frighteningly the lives of others) before we achieve this.

In the hands of a responsible adult, facebook has it's benefits.

Sadly it is used by the not so adult and the not so responsible as a tool for scoring points or settling scores.

For many, it is merely an online version of The Jeremy Kyle Show in a less controlled environment.

That mentality and lack of rational thinking lead, in my opinion, to the type of situation mentioned in the OP.

Is facebook to blame ?

I believe not, but it is certainly complicit in how it tracks and manages it users, the comments they make, the groups they form and the campaigns they start.

It should be moderated / censored to a greater level at the very least.

I think Ruggers is overdue a promotion

Just goes to show some people maliciously spread misinformation and the truth can get distorted. I would be better if things were blacked out until the courts deal with things and promptly too for all parties is better.

It's all too easy to post a few messages and have no comeback or just put it down to opinion. There has always been gossip and malicious comments about people but this was usually very contained.

Nowadays it's all so easy to post up gossip and it reaches a far wider audience and with all gossip it gains momentum as it continues.

My friend involved the police recently when her new husbands ex girlfriend posted some spiteful stuff on facebook about how he used to hit her when they were together. This escalated into personal comments about my friends looks ie she wears far too much makeup, it must be to cover black eyes. It was damaging because my friend works as a doctors receptionist in a small village and some of the comments were posted by patients and it escalated to how bad she was at her job. She only found out when an anonymous person posted the entire conversation through the door of the surgery.

The police visited 3 of the people who made the comments and it seemed that it scared them , they didn't think that gossipy comments would cause problems but when you type words on a social media site into the public domain, then it cam come back to bite you on the ass.
