I know this conversation thread will cause much controversy and division but, what takeaway/fast food/restaurant do you think is overrated?

I'll go first, Nandos

It's just chicken guys, and the chicken isn't even that good

Nando's.

Only ever had it once and never again.

Half a chicken which was dry and tasteless. And very small portion sizes, think I had a baby chicken

To be honest there are just so many and usually English style places, to many microwave chefs I think

Five guys is overrated especially linked to price

Indian and Chinese from personal experience tend to be decent by me.

Had a burger in a pub last night and it was absolutely below average, bland chips etc

Nandos. Was ok many years ago and now it's terrible. Small chicken and overpriced. Do my own.

KFC, I remember when you got a bargain bucket you couldn't put the lid on and the burgers were nice, absolutely crap now.

I've n3ver been to a Nando's. Probably because people say the same as you.

I do love a KFC, but they do vary from place to place. Some are excellent others are terrible.

Burger King.

That’s of course if indeed it ever was held in any semblance of lofty esteem (and presumably only by kiddies I’d wager).

Every time I’ve had one it gives me indigestion.

Chinese.

From a personal viewpoint — once I started eating Thai, Vietnamese and Korean I never went back to Chinese cuisine. I just find it insipid, lacking in fragrant taste and aroma, 'inversatile' in flavour, comparatively bland and unsatisfying.

Sadly quality has deteriorated shockingly even in usually good restaurants. Personally I have never been fond of any fast food chains except on a handful of occassions due to a need at the time. I am lucky to have a great fish and chips place near me and undulge sometimes

McDonald’s - mostly tasteless shit that arrived looking like it was thrown together and then stamped on

Greggs - everything cold these days, every steak bake I ever had was just filled with gravy

Nando’s - had once in life wasn’t bad but was expecting far more for the way people talk about it

I had a burger at one of those chains I forget its name it was nice enough but about 15 quid for one burger which was tiny

Granted, they don't market themselves as artisan burgers like GBK, Ground, Honest... they're more 'dirty burgers' (a term often used in London, 'not sure anywhere else).

I don't think I've had nandos and it doesn't particularly interest me.

The thought of KFC makes me feel sick.

Every so often I really fancy McDonald's and then become filled with self loathing halfway into the burger. They do good coffee though

Greggs- I'm perpetually bewildered by the national obsession.

You can tell I'm pretty classy from that list eh?

Chip shop chips.

Just to explain when I was a kid chip shop chips were awesome. They were a rare treat we had maybe once every month or two. But...they were absolutely fucking divine when we did have them.

Fast forward to my late teens when I started working. There was a chippy nearby and every Friday everybody had a chippy lunch. However...I found the chips weren't very nice. The taste and texture just weren't right; these weren't chippy chips like I remembered! Over the course of my late teens to mid-20s I tried chips from several different chip shops and came to the same conclusion: chips just aren't very nice. Maybe the fact they were a rare treat in my childhood was the reason I used to love them so much.

Then, one day in my early 20s I happened to be in a different city looking for a sandwich in an eatery area. However, a certain delicious smell I remembered from my childhood caught my attention. It turned out it was coming from a chip shop and I had to have the chips. Whilst eating the chips I was taken right back to being about 10 years old. But...chips are just peeled and thick cut potatoes that have been deep-fried...why did they taste different from here?

I asked the chippy bloke what potatoes he used and what he fried them in. It turned out the potatoes weren't anything special - I think he said "Huh? Just like big jacket potatoes". I then asked him what they were fried in and he replied (worryingly, from memory): "Lard...is that OK?" I think he was worried I was a vegetarian or had religious reasons for not eating pork but I assured him it was fine and they really were the best chips I had eaten in years.

I have since discovered that chips aren't chips unless they're deep-fried in some sort of animal fat like lard or beef dripping. Vegetable oils just ruin them but I suppose cost means nearly every chip shop just uses some sort of vegetable oil these days. I suspect economies is what ruins most fast food outlets - I rarely eat anything now from takeaways or chain restaurants that I find I can't cook better myself.

Oh I do the same! Maybe once or twice a year I convince myself I want a McDonald’s sausage and egg McMuffin, then recall why I’ve not touched one in months
