The meaning of christmas.

From the land of haribos.

I was watching the news and they said how now many people are getting into debt during the christmas period as they have to by presents and all sorts, whilst I can understand they do it for the children mostly, yet it is an endless cycle, each year.

I think that people have forgotten what the meaning of christmas is, in my view the reason why it have gotten out of hand with people getting into debt over it is because it have been too much commercialized, the way I see it, christmas is not about big celebrations, it is about spending time with the loved ones, thinking of jesus and have a nice dinner, sure one or 2 presents are ok too.

Do you agree, what is your view about what the meaning of christmas is about?

Christmas for me is about time

You can have all the money in the world but for me time is the most precious commodity going

It is about spending time with loved ones and thanking each other for the love and care and support over the year. Reflecting on things that have happened

I think there is pressure, particularly if you are poor, but the more you seem to have the less you seem to spend at Christmas, and the more you shift the focus off of your own needs. In this case away from the need to validate yourself & feel worthwhile by buying expensive gifts you can’t afford.

I guess there are two meanings for Christmas aren’t they? There is the religious meaning , about the ultimate sacrifice , earthly death and then spiritual rebirth, which resonates with a lot of people regardless of their beliefs.

Then there is the more modern meaning of Christmas, which is about thinking of others, giving gifts, taking a break to spend time thinking about others.

This for me, definitely. Particularly when my grandparents were alive ❤️

Nowadays I’m just glad to have the time off work with my kids and go out for some long walks.

No real meaning for me.

It’s a nice break from the mundane, a couple of weeks rest. I shall do my best Santa impression to enhance the joy for Mini Wick.

Beyond that, I won’t be making a big deal.

Magickal for and with small kids, pretty lights in the darkness, a nice way of navigating the shortest daylight days.

Family are lovely to see, but not forcing yourself to spend 12 hours around Auntie Flatulent and Uncle Racist on Xmas Day.

They get half an hour, on some other day.

Totally agree with this.

I spend what I can afford but the main thing is having a break and time with family and friends.

I cannot comment.

While I’m here though, random question entirely unrelated subject..have you been naughty or nice this year?

Indeed! Love having a week off to spend with the kids and play games.

It is also a nice bookend for the year. Without it I would just bumble from one year to the next.

Christmas for us is about spending a few days with family and friends. We all get together and do a Secret Santa with a spending cap of £10-15. We all pitch in with the food costs, so no one is out of pocket. It works well as there is no financial pressure on any one or politics of present giving and reciprocation. Also in our culture we celebrate Xmas eve, not Xmas day, so we have all day to prepare a feast and the festivities start at around 7pm. Presents are exchanged after dinner. So there is no pressure to get everything ready for lunch time like a traditional English Christmas day.

Christmas has always been about family for me, even when growing up. I’ve never gone into debt for it either. My kids, when they believed in Santa, also knew that mum & dad had to pay Santa for the presents.

T loves Christmas so much that we got married a few days after & it was so nice to spend the day with all our family & friends.

I don't celebrate Christmas in a literal way, I don't think many people do. In fact I doubt most even think of jesus in connection with it.

I prefer to think of it as a midwinter celebration with the holly boughs going up at the start of December/end November, 12 days feasting starting on 24th and decorations coming down at Candlemas in early February.

It's an age old pagan festival, during the harsh winter period, for getting together and celebrating. Probably still being alive and having some food was reason enough, in those days. It was adopted into the Christian religion. It's sad that commercial pressure is too heavy on people, when it should be about spending time together

For me christmas is about a bit of light in the darkest months. Personally that's taking a break from work, spending time with the people I love, and eating and drinking and doing things I don't normally. A small respite from everyday life.

I am blessed to be in a financial position where I don't need to control the purse strings particularly tightly, but I've still loved christmas even when I've been flat broke and had chicken nuggets for christmas dinner and given away my time as gifts (mostly cleaning, cooking, bit of babysitting) because I couldn't afford to give anything else.

I hate that people feel they need to put themselves into debt to keep up appearances or to meet increasingly unrealistic expectations.

I hate that too but the pressure is immense.

I look back on times when our children were small and we had next to no disposable income. We really struggled to but gifts for people but felt obliged because they bought gifts for our children. I saw some gifts we'd given months later at the back of a family members wardrobe in the charity shop pile. I really wondered why we'd bothered.

Daughter and I have set a £20 limit. I'm happier spending time with her and cooking/drinking than anything else.

I have heaps of extended family and I know my mum was the same. Eventually it got to a point where she called a bit of a pow-wow one January and told most of the family she couldn't afford it any more, not to buy me and my brother because she couldn't buy for their kids.

She is a great cook for cakes and sweets, and the family she was close to got packages of peppermint creams and coconut ice and mince pies and cinder toffee - at the time it was much cheaper than buying packs of sweets or selection boxes. It was the late 70s/early 80s and I was talking to one of my cousins this week who still remembers those parcels fondly.

It's also a lot easier for me because I'm childfree - I do get that! I have been able to do it on the cheap when necessary because I've only myself to think about.

Was amazing when kids were young and seeing their reactions.

Bit more mellow now, but as long as they’re happy.

In wider terms, materialism and consumerism pushes a lot of people to the brink.

Hearing the radio Cash for Kids Mission Christmas updates shows that there’s a lot of need for help in the UK and not all will be having an easy time with Christmas and the pressure it brings.
