I rented a flat after my divorce and the floors creaked just by walking on them. At 2am you could often hear the old lady upstairs doing laps of the flat and the chap downstairs would shout and bang on the ceiling/floor whenever you walked into the room above where he was. When he tried to get us evicted it became a fun game to annoy him. Oh how we laughed.

I think 10pm is a reasonable cut off. Keep telly at a sensible level (get hearing aids if you can't hear it), don't have noisy sex or loud arguments after that time, basically be considerate.

We had to write a polite note to a neighbour about five houses away who's telly was so loud we could hear it in our bedroom. They liked darts and until about 3 am all we could hear was 'one hundred and eighty".

If you live in a house that’s not detached and can hear each other. I don’t think there’s ever a reasonable time to make loud noise. Definitely not outside of 9 am and 5 pm. These are the rules that noisy workers generally follow.

We ended up moving once because the neighbours were just so noisy and horrible

I once wrote a note to a neighbour who had moved in a few months before and decided to keep numerous cockerels (and hens) in his front garden.

Those fecking cocks crowed from 3am onwards. And you don’t need multiple cockerels. One would have sufficed!

I had a toddler at the time whose bedroom faced out onto the front. I was not happy and my neighbour found that out!

He got rid of the cockerels and just kept the hens. He never spoke to me again.

It's starting to look like this is going to be the only option unfortunately.

They are really aggressive unreasonable people, I guess the situation is partly our fault for not complaining sooner.

20 year's we have put up with it and not complained once.

I've soundproofed our bedroom wall because their front room is next to our bedroom.

The whole situation is a mess, where we live it's really quiet except these morons we live in a terrace they are end of terrace with nobody else to disturb.

There's a guy who's a drug addict and alcoholic been in and out of jail he's 50 he lives with his mummy he's extremely aggressive and angry all the time.

Mum is 70+ and same very aggressive and when she starts it's like some machine that doesn't pause for breath.

They literally argue constantly from the moment they wake until they go to bed , just constantly yelling telling each other to fuck off.

He doesn't work and never worked she's the same.

Problem is we cannot afford to sell up and don't know what to do,if we get the council involved it means a permanent record which shows on local search if selling.

It's making me unwell and stressed constantly.

I really do feel for you OP.

I used to live below someone who has been maliciously leaving their TV on full volume when they were going to work, and leaving it on for the whole weekends while they were away, claiming it was to keep their cat company so she wouldn’t feel lonely.

The council got involved but they were absolutely useless. I got hospitalised for MH due to the whole ordeal. We eventually moved, and I started to get my life back. People don’t understand the impact of being in this situation until they are involved themselves, and appreciate their good neighbours. I now live next door to an extremely loud music enthusiasts but they only put it on for a few hours a day so I rather count my blessings.

Sorry I don’t have too much of an advice for you, just wanted to share in sympathy.

evening noise its not as far as people think

workhours is work hrs 9am to 5pm and that is 7 days a week

5pm to 9pm is casual noise workers can mow the lawn and do housework up until 9pm after that its reduced sound to be considerate to your neighbours

you can rarely shift the noise when emergency is needed to do the work

Honest mate I’d seriously consider moving, this shouldn’t have to be the answer but it’s probably the only solution

Our first house was next door to a landlord who preferred to rent to those on the dole as he got the rent paid directly to him. The first lass was ok then she moved out and was never to be the same again.

Next tennant played music and had house fulls till early hours most nights of the week and this was a woman in her 50s, our kids were young then and I worked days and the ex worked evenings and weekends and it just added to the stress being kept awake, we did complain to landlord and he did have words but never made a difference she even had me attacked by two utter scrotes that were at her house one night having to fight on the front lawn in front of the exes kids ffs

Next tenant was just as bad same shit

In the end we had to skint ourselves renting our house out (couldn’t sell for 5 years as bought off council) and renting another place but it was worth it for the peace, it nearly cracked me up those few years there even now I’m still paranoid about noise it did change a part of me that was never the same

Honest mate it’s not worth it I’d move

Put a complaint into the council, but also make lots of noise in return, maybe v early in the morning.

Years ago a neighbour below me, he used to make a fair bit of noise late on. I had 7 am starts and used to be extra noisy first thing. Ie TV on really loud, slamming doors and stomping.

Luckily he didn't stay very long,they can make your lives a misery though so I sympathise.

Keep a log of all that happens, dates times etc too.

I understand. But not a chance with this lot the son is a big lump, skinhead been in and out of jail, assaulted police officers and only knows two words. Fuck and off, we lay in bed listening to him and his mum arguing together he calls her all the cunts fucking bitch slag you name it.

She's just as bad 4ft 9 of mouth.

Last conversation we had was about 15 years ago when I knocked on their door at 4 am on a Sunday night Monday morning, they'd been having a party since the early afternoon of the Sunday.

I politely asked them to be quiet door slammed in my face.

Next day I thought she was coming to apologize but she came and had a go "how dare you knock on my fucking door at 4am we were having a party for my son who's just got out of prison"

They are a waste of space and not even worthy of Jeremy Kyle

Had problems with noisy neighbours for years, I would constantly be calling in asking them to keep it down n they would for a few days then back to normal.

Then one day caught me in a bad mood, saw the father who is a good 20 years younger than me, so I laid into him n gave him a good punch in the face.

That was over 2 years ago n still now I don't hear a peep out of them.

Just wish I hit him years ago.

Sometimes violence in the answer.

im also the same

i have the tools and they are noisy

petrol tools that are maintained

electric grinders

have i used a grinder at 10pm yes as i had no choice but i did appologise to the neighbours ( as it was a 1 off )

will i repair the car on the drive yes weld and grind the material

do you have a right to a peaceful life not really but i dont abuse it

as im allowed to do repairs to the vehicle or the property if you work all week and so do i, only time i can repair is at the weekends.

its not constant so im not affecting the right to a peaceful life

do i play loud music yes but i have good 2ft boundary walls, i have swapped to a pc and surround sound but i still like the bass sound

most new houses are crap built with the boundary wall pre 1900s the boundary walls are thick 4-5 bricks wide

the boundary walls have reduced to 2 bricks wide or even 3 bricks wide council houses are the worst for this

so if you have bought council tough luck you will have to add a sound break onto the boundary wall

single boundary walls do exist though and there 3" thick + plaster

ive known boundary walls in lofts to be just a wood frame no insulation and plasterboarded

a note has to be said anyone that uses a petrol tool is affecting someone right to a peaceful life but not in work hrs

since sunday comments have been used everyone has the right to maintain there property.

this includes mowing the lawn and hedge trimming your right to a peaceful life is not affected

dont think of having partys every weekend as this is affecting the right to a peaceful life

You really need to check up on the definition of a noise nuisance as set down by the environment agency.

Because it's during the day doesn't mean you can do whatever you want.

I’ve got a ton of experience in this field and, as I’m sure you’ve gathered, anything you do other than put up or sell up is fighting a losing battle. The fact is that even many reasonable people often don’t realise they are being noisy, but of course they would adjust their behaviour if asked. Unreasonable people couldn’t give a shit about being neighbourly, they only care about their own happiness. The frustrating thing is you can’t play them at their own game because it just turns into oneupmanship and they have far less to lose than us. And we have an innate reasonableness that prevents us from sparring with an cunt.

Anti-social behaviour just isn’t dealt with robustly by housing associations or councils these days.

I sympathise. I live in a flat and it’s fairly quiet but I can hear the people below me fucking or watching tv. Instead of complaining I bought some really good ear plugs for sleeping. Have you considered that? I know you shouldn’t have to but, let’s face it, you do have to.

Either that or sell up then go back one night and murder them to death.

Thanks for your reply and yes I have some wax earplugs and noise cancelling headphones and I can still hear them shouting.

What you can do to get a good night sleep is to play white noise. I have it and it works, it blocks out the sound, there are different kind of white noises you can play. I have the sound of waves too.
