Private Health Insurance

Private health insurance with Doctors at hand - friend told me to go for it, as with this plan, it’s easier to see a GP whenever you need to. Anyone’s got it? Feedback please?

Wouldn't live without it, got very sick on a trip to Texas a few years back, rang home told them I'm in a bad way, they rang me 30 minutes later with directions to what hospital I had to present to, they looked after everything, even heard their rep shout down the phone at the Admin staff members to do not charge our client.

It's part of my job package but if I left in the morning I'd gladly pay for it myself.

I doubt a private individual could purchase a fool proof health insurance scheme the premiums would be phenomenal. I recently had to go for my first private visit to the local mydentist site, for the check up, 3 x rays a simple extraction 2 fillings and visit the hygenist just over £700.00 If you got go to hospital for a leg off or cancer treatment fook only knows what it would cost. If entering the work place you may need to consider a placement with a large organization with full on medical cover for you and your family. I have worked since 15 never gave it a thought that I would have to end up paying for dental treatment let alone medical issues. I rather hope not too many start paying for the doc or it will go the same way as dentists, I fully understand why those who can do it, but an awful lot of folks will not be able to afford the dentist let alone docs.

Isnt that travel insurance rather than private UK medical insurance? Or does your policy cover you for both?

I don’t have it at the moment, but I’ve actually had it for most of the last 30 years and I’m missing it already.

Yeah, you get to see a doctor whenever you want, if you’re happy to do a video call you get appointments within 15 minutes and prescriptions sent by WhatsApp straight away. If you need to have bloods x-rays or MRI, it’s typically same or next day. If you need to see specialists, it’s normally no more than three or four days waiting and any minor operations the same.

I don’t know about in the UK but in other countries where there is no NHS, doctors are much more multifunctional for example if I go and see a dermatologist and I need a lump removing from my skin skin tag they will just numb it up and do it while we chat or if you need blood they will just take the bloods. I saw an audiologist recently and as well as doing all the measurements you just fired a perception and gave my ears a good clean with the NHS that would need to be a separate appointment.

If you are considering going private, then my advice would be to not do it in the UK. It’s far too expensive. Just get your medical done while you are on holiday. But obviously if you really need to see a doctor urgently, then either pay the hundred pounds of whatever , or just ask for an emergency NHS appointment they should be able to get you on same day if it’s important.

But if you need to see a specialist or consultant, then I think you’re looking at 200 to £500 per visit in the UK, depending on who you see and what it is for, and they will likely charge you for all the extra things like bloods scans prescriptions on top so it gets quite pricey without insurance

If we could afford it we'd have it and pay for our kids and their partners too. Mr N used to have it with his job, he was seen by a consultant in hours when he had a serious problem.

It’s not so much about the premiums, but when you purchase BUPA gold/global individually, which is probably the best health insurance there is, you cannot get pre existing conditions as an individual, but through a company policy you can.

Through the company the policy for an individual is around £6000 a year now it was cheaper before Covid. If you include your partner and children up to the age of 18, it’s about 10,000 a year.. to take this out individually, without the pre existing conditions, it’s about £9000 and £14,000 per year respectively.

Also if your employer pays for it it becomes a taxable benefit so-that £6000 they pay for you and you have to pay £2400 extra tax.

It’s just not worth it unless you are a proper Health tourist and some people are like that, I was a bit, you get everything done, podiatry, nutritionists, physio, and Chiro, sleepers, naughty pills and drugs if you want them , there is also whole ton of alternative, complimentary and well-being stuff in there that you can use for fun.

It’s like all insurance, the masses pay for the small numbers of people that rarely get the benefits

Jesus that sounds like America, do ye not have Specific medical insurance companies, that being who don't offer other insurance categories???

I pay private for dentist last work 6 months back was £1600 also have AXA ppp witch is only £250 a month for me and the wife witch includes GP. Going in for an operation on Wednesday that the NHS are stalling due to wating lists. This is a preexisting problem as I had the same procedure 8 years ago. On the NHS

I have cover. The GP service is particularly useful due to the convenience and ability to get appointments usually within the hour.

I have had an operation utilising the insurance once and could not fault the service.

I can’t fault whatever experience I have had with the NHS it’s just the wait time.

I have been kept on as a company director in order that I can maintain medical insurance for my family. I pay the premium myself but the difference between being involved in a scheme for a number of years and starting a fresh was approximately 3.25 x the premium should I want to have started it after I resigned as joint MD

Tragically, the health service is in a pickle and the problem run deep, particularly on its

management and procurement

I’ve called on the Insurance three times my last was to fuse my ankle after a Rugby injury and then breaking it later in life

My son and daughter have had shoulder operations and my son had his nose rebuilt after a boxing match

That said, there has to be an alternative when the concept of free for all is now an anathema

I’ve been a 40% taxpayer for a very long time and contributed to the NHS all my working life like us all but it really is a moral dilemma but the dilemma is if you’re seriously ill you need action promptly and that’s why I pay the premium and unfortunate enough to be able to Continue it as long as the company carries it on .

In passing the selfless work of the nurses that I’ve seen is just frankly remarkable,

The one thing that I still can never get over is the arrogance of some consultants how nurses put up with it and patients put up with it I’ll never know
